On July 15, 2026, MARTA embarked on its first membership activity event. “Thanks” to Sally Brown for planning and organizing this cruise aboard the HARBOR LADY along the Milwaukee River, the Milwaukee harbor, and out into Lake Michigan. Not only were members treated to a delightful cruise, but they also had the pleasure of a picnic lunch featuring bratwurst and hamburgers with all the fixings, pasta salad, and potato chips. Gluten free food was also available. Water was provided and an open bar was available for other beverages. Eighty members participated in this event. Members met and parked their cars in the MPS parking lot where they boarded two buses from Lamars to transport everyone to the boat dock. The weather was perfect and everyone had a fantastic time. Special “Thanks" to Sally Brown, Roseann Lococo, and Leon Gegere for putting this extraordinary event together.

In the early morning of June 30, 2026, a fire of unknown cause broke out at Lincoln Avenue School. Fortunately, no one was in the building at the time, and no one was hurt.
MPS announced that the full K3-5th student body will move to Casimir Pulaski High School Milwaukee for the upcoming school year.

The MTEA has set up a fund with the MPS Foundation for teachers and other staff of Lincoln Ave School to assist with replenishing classroom supplies.
Monetary Donations:
*MARTA members can contribute to the tax-exempt fund by writing a check to the MPS Foundation (be sure to specify “Lincoln Ave. School” in the memo section) and mailing it to: Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation, 234 W. Galena Street, Milwaukee, WI 53221.

*You can make a direct, tax-deductible contribution through the MPS Foundation (select “Lincoln Avenue Elementary School Fund”). The funds will be first used to support the school’s classroom and teacher needs, followed other areas of greatest need as determined by school leaders as they work to support the school now and in the future.

The district welcomes school/teacher supplies for Lincoln Avenue students and staff. You can drop off items at MPS Central Services (5225 W. Vliet St., Room 142) Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Despite not having an available microphone, Debra Jupka, chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, did an excellent job of introducing our scholarship winners.
Charles Zahnow, MARTA’s Vice President did a fine job of presenting the scholarships.
It should be pointed out that not only did our winners receive their scholarships, they also received MARTA's elite spinner pen to keep them occupied during not so interesting class season, and also MARTA ’s dual function flashlight to help them find their way in the future. Congratulations to all our scholarship winners and we wish them every success on their educational journey. MARTA’s also wants express "Thanks and Gratitude” to the members who serve on the Scholarship Committee.

The Milwaukee Area Retired Teachers’ Association held their annual Scholarship Luncheon on Monday, May 11, 2026. There were 120 members present along with scholarship winners and their families. MARTA awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are entering the profession of education. This year we awarded six scholarships to students from five different school districts. Students from Rufus King High School, St. Francis High School, Nicolet High Union High School, Franklin High School, the Hmong American Peace Academy and Greenfield High School were this year’s recipients.

At MARTA’s March Luncheon~
Four of our members went home with handcrafted quilts that were crafted by LaVerne G. She has been providing MARTA with quilts for the March luncheon for at least the past eight years. And thirteen MARTA members went home with $16 gas gift cards from Kwik Trip. The cards are redeemable at any Kwik Trip location for gas or food.

The speaker for the March luncheon was Mr. Jameson Greenfield, Chief Financial Officer for the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB). He was accompanied by Mr. Harrison Freuck. Mr. Greenfield told the membership about the upcoming increase in our pension benefits and the investment strategy of SWIB. These are difficult times for investment strategies, especially with the onset of the war with Iran, but SWIB has a very diversified portfolio to hopefully, weather most conditions. There has been a lot of talk lately about whether the Federal Reserve should raise or lower interest rates. He provided a very good understanding about the need to raise, lower, or hold steady with the current interest rate.
