Barbara Johnson was the first African-American Catholic woman to work at the hospital where she began her vocation as a hospital chaplain. Looking back, she sees her call to chaplaincy began many years before, thanks to her loving family and life in education. Read Johnson’s full story in the article “An Instrument of Christ’s Love.”

It was a joy to visit one of the NACC’s Education Collaborators, Loyola University New Orleans, and spend time with Tracy Lamont, Director of the Loyola Institute for Ministry, and longtime NACC chaplain Patricia Crowley BCC, who also serves as Chair of the NACC Ethics Commission.

We are grateful for the partnership between the NACC and Loyola University, a fellow member of the Association of Graduate Programs in Ministry (AGPIM). Through collaboration and shared commitment, we can continue advancing chaplaincy and preparing the next generation of spiritual care leaders.

Members of the NACC Board and staff had the opportunity to attend the annual conference of the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) in New Orleans this past week.

We were grateful for the chance to connect with APC leadership and colleagues, strengthen relationships across the profession, and gather with Catholic chaplains for Mass, fellowship, and meaningful conversation.

The NACC is thankful for our ongoing partnership with APC and is looking forward to the year ahead as we continue advancing the ministry of spiritual care together.

The NACC was blessed to be part of the 2026 Catholic Health Association’s (CHA) Assembly, United for Change. It was wonderful to see so many NACC members gathered with colleagues from across the ministry. The Assembly offered inspiring keynote speakers, meaningful liturgies, valuable networking opportunities, and time to reconnect with friends and partners in mission.

We are grateful for the leadership of CHA and for our ongoing partnership as we work together to advance compassionate care and ministry.
