Welcome to Linden Volunteer Fire Department Alex Smith. Alex recently joined & will be attending 60-hour Entry-Level Fire Fighter training this Fall at Southwest Tech Public Safety hosted at the Livingston-Clifton Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders station.

We are also pleased by hard work by the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association FEMA SAFER Grant. Alex is eligible to be outfitted in Structure Firefighting Turn Out Gear utilizing FEMA SAFER Grant funds covering up to $3,000. As well as covering the cost of a NFPA 1582 Health Screen Physician's Exam.

The Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association recently hosted a regional Modern Day Recruiter session in Port Washington. Attendees walked away with actionable strategies they can implement immediately to elevate how their departments:

● Attract & Market: Connect with and inspire the next generation of Fire and EMS talent.
● Select & Onboard: Streamline application, interview, testing, and training pipelines for long-term success.
● Innovate: Leverage AI tools and align service delivery models with today’s community opportunities.

WSFCA is committed to putting practical, no-cost resources directly into our members' hands to strengthen departments statewide. A big thank you to Jerry Streich for teaching this class and helping us hone in on our recruitment and retention initiatives.

RECRUITMENT TRAINING:

Wisconsin fire and EMS leaders — if staffing is a challenge, this class is for you.

Join us Wednesday, October 14th, at the Port Washington Fire/Rescue Department for the Modern Day Recruiter Class. The class begins at 6:00 p.m. and is FREE for Wisconsin fire and EMS personnel.

This is not another class telling you to post on Facebook, hang a banner, and hope someone applies.

We are going to talk about what recruitment really looks like today.

Attendees will learn the modern tools, strategies, and processes being used to plan for staffing needs, attract better candidates, market their departments, conduct interviews, make hiring decisions, and successfully bring new members into the organization.

We will also discuss the areas many departments rarely receive training on — HR practices, employment law, criminal history, health screening, the use of AI, candidate selection, common recruitment barriers, and the myths that continue to hold departments back.

Recruitment has changed.

The workforce has changed.

It is time for the fire service to do things differently.

If you are a chief, officer, firefighter, EMT, recruiter, or department leader who wants to improve your staffing model, I encourage you to attend.

Thank you, Gordon Volunteer Fire Department for hosting our first in a series of the Modern Day Recruiter Class. Douglas County is now much more educated with tools to create or improve their recruitment and retention plan.

This class, funded by a FEMA SAFER grant is moving across the State of with ten classes already scheduled, or in the process of being scheduled.

If you are interested in hosting a three hour class for your region, please contact us. We need hosts for NE and SW Wisconsin at this time.

It is time to do things differently, and we intend to lead the way to a smarter, safer, and better staffed fire service. 🫡
