We’re proud to share that we’ve been named a Community Partner with Milwaukee Film!

As part of this partnership, we’re excited to highlight Traces of Home — a powerful, award-winning documentary directed by Colette Ghunim and executive produced by Melissa Barrera and John Leguizamo, in collaboration with Kartemquin Films.

Traces of Home documents the journeys with Colette’s parents to find the ancestral houses they were forced to flee as children in Mexico and Palestine. What begins as a desire to connect to Colette’s cultural origins turns into an internal quest to heal her troubled relationship with her parents and within herself.

Delving into the past and not shying away from the dug-up pain, a young filmmaker speaks to her Mexican mother and Palestinian father about their trying journeys into the United States. In a society with rhetoric increasingly vilifying Mexicans and Palestinians, the filmmaker picks up her camera in a bid to address the grief at the center of the generational trauma that has underscored her relationship with her family. A meditation of loss and grief relieved, ultimately, through reconciliation.

You can catch this film this weekend at the Oriental Theater. We’re honored to be part of bringing stories like this to our community. 💛

This young man, Shukuru, will soon become a U.S. citizen, just like his father.

Because of your support, we were able to stand with him through months of uncertainty.

He passed his citizenship test months ago, but while other Oath Ceremonies moved forward, refugee clients like him were left waiting with no timeline and no answers.

So we kept pushing. We reached out to congressional offices, followed up with USCIS, and refused to let these families be overlooked.

Now, that wait is finally over.

He is one of 14 CCI clients who will soon become U.S. citizens.

This is what your support makes possible: not just legal status, but stability, opportunity, and a sense of belonging.

Thank you for standing with our community

We’re honored to be featured by Wisconsin Literacy for our work supporting refugees on their path to U.S. citizenship!

We believe achieving U.S. citizenship requires comprehensive support. Through an integrated approach, CCI provides English language instruction, citizenship preparation, and affordable legal services so immigrant families can successfully navigate every step of the naturalization process.

Given escalating threats to immigrant rights, this holistic approach is essential to help refugees build stable, dignified lives in Milwaukee.

We’re proud to stand alongside Wisconsin Literacy and partners across the state who are transforming refugee and immigrant lives through literacy. 💙

🎉 We’re celebrating 5 years of impact at Community Center for Immigrants!

Because of supporters like you, hundreds of immigrant families in Milwaukee have found stability, opportunity, and belonging. Over the past five years:

✨ 450+ immigrants became U.S. citizens
✨ 2,000+ families received immigration legal support
✨ 200+ adults strengthened their English and career opportunities

One of those stories is Sultan's. After becoming a U.S. citizen through CCI, he continued improving his English, earned multiple promotions at work, voted for the first time in 2024, and now helps others in the Rohingya community access resources and opportunity.

Stories like Sultan’s are possible because of you. Thank you for helping build a stronger, more welcoming Milwaukee for all. 💙

Last Saturday, we shared urgent updates on green cards and citizenship processing to over 100 refugees. The chaos caused by the Trump administration is undeniable.

The current pause on application processing goes far beyond canceled citizenship ceremonies. It is harming people's mental health, destabilizing families’ livelihoods, and putting people at risk of losing critical government benefits—pushing many toward long-term poverty.

We offered dozens of free legal consultations to provide accurate information. The most common concern was how to talk with employers about work authorization to avoid wrongful termination based on incorrect assumptions.

Thank you to Burmese Rohingya Community of Wisconsin for hosting us and providing food, and to Hanan Relief Group for donating bags of rice for families to take home. Community and collaboration make this work possible.

Thank you to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for for shining a light on the devastating impact of the federal immigration processing pause.

As this article shows, refugees and immigrants in Milwaukee are now stuck in limbo simply because of where they were born.

At CCI, we are seeing the real consequences of this policy every day: canceled citizenship ceremonies, stalled green cards, delayed work permits, and families losing jobs and income through no fault of their own.

Our clients deserve fairness, clarity, and the chance to fully belong in the communities they already call home.

Trump halted all legal immigration processing for people from Myanmar and 74 other countries, leaving in limbo local immigrants and refugees.

This Saturday, January 10th from 1-3pm, please join us at Burmese Rohingya Community of Wisconsin for updates on refugee green cards and citizenship. Our Executive Director, Caitlyn, will be discussing what has been happening and what we have been seeing.

People will also have the chance to ask questions and get information about how this impacts their case.

Thank you to Hanan Relief Group for generously providing food donations to be shared with families at the event.
