We at the MSOE chapter of EWB-USA are so excited to see the work that the community has done to build their school in order to serve more students from Chosavic and surrounding communities. We hope to visit soon and celebrate with them in person.

As much as we wish we were there, we knew it was the right decision to cancel travel plans. Omicron hadn't yet even arrived around Joyabaj and too many covid tests here were giving false negatives. Nonetheless, the Manantial water storage tank and distribution system is under construction! It hurts not being there but we couldn't be happier that the Guatemala office staff and community members are moving forward with this project which will improve their daily lives in so many ways.

Thanks to AE sophomore Olivia Swain for her presentation in commemoration of Black History Month! Ms Swain is an officer in MSOE's chapter of National Society of Black Engineers, which has quadrupled in size since 2019. Among other things, Ms Swain introduced us to a few pioneers in the fields of engineering and technology.

Braithwaite "was the senior engineer responsible for developing Boeing's use of computer technology in the design of airplanes. He supervised the engineering development of numerous Boeing aircraft including the 777, the first commercial aircraft to be designed entirely with CAD software. In 2000, Braithwaite became President of Boeing Africa, before retiring three years later as the highest-ranking black executive in Boeing's history."

We had hoped to visit Manantial and Chosavic over the school break, in addition to meeting with the Board of Directors with our partner NGO, EWB Guatemala, in Guatemala City. In spite of having to cancel our trip, the work continues thanks to civil engineer Tatiana Maldonado, project coordinator Bernabe Morales (with a university degree in k'iche!), and foreman affectionately known as "Cleto." Tatiana continues to coordinate the water distribution system design review process; Cleto is overseeing the Chosavic school expansion; Bernabe is continuing to liaison between our chapter and the community of Manantial as well as verify supplies availability etc. It is very reassuring to have such skilled, motivated, and trustworthy partners in Guatemala especially during these times. Bernabe captured the people of Manantial in photos for us during a recent visit. One can tell from the woman's huipil pattern that the village is near the Department of Quiche and thus is influenced by their dress. As we close out 2021, there are so many people for whom we are grateful, without which our partnerships with the communities in Guatemala wouldn't be possible. Thank you, Gracias, and Maltiox!

Thanks to whatsapp and a very dilligent Cleto, we've been enjoying real-time updates of the Chosavic School expansion progress! It may be cold in Wisconsin, but it's warm and sunny in Guatemala and community members are getting in their "turnos" (sweat equity days of work) on the jobsite.

We celebrated winning the NCEES Engineering Education Award, advanced our three active projects, participated in a sustainable development workshop, said goodbye to a graduate, and mourned the loss of a professional mentor and friend. We also launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for our current and future projects.
