As teachers, we are constantly coming up with creative ways to engage our students. But rarely do we have the opportunity to share what we create with fellow educators. This Teacher Resource Exchange seeks to change that! Who needs “teachers pay teachers” when instead teachers can teach teachers?

ARTLC and Rethinking Schools invite educators from across the country to gather for a Teacher Resource Exchange on Wednesday, October 28th from 7:30PM EST - 8:30PM EST // 4:30PM PST - 5:30PM PST via Zoom. At this event, teachers will attend curated breakout rooms based on grade level and content area, where fellow educators will showcase tried and true resources.

Participants will leave this event with a bundle of new teacher-created lessons, units, assessments, and practices, all of which will be explained by the teachers who designed them. All of these resources will be easily and freely accessible on our teacher resource bank.

In our 40th anniversary, Rethinking Schools is reflecting on the questions that have shaped our work — whose version of history do we accept, whose do we ignore, and which are taught? Almost four decades ago Indigenous Peoples Day jumpstarted Rethinking Schools’ book production asking, “Why rethink Christopher Columbus? Because the Columbus myth is a foundation of children’s beliefs about society. Columbus is often a child’s first lesson about encounters between different cultures and races.” Since then, we’ve continued to ask questions that challenge the narratives taught as formative to students across the U.S. school system.⁠

Did you know Rethinking Columbus was the first book offered by Rethinking Schools?!

First published in 1991, now in its expanded second edition, Rethinking Columbus has changed the way schools teach about the “discovery of America.” This greatly expanded edition has more than 100 pages of new material, including handouts to conduct a classroom “Trial of Columbus” and other activities.

Join Rethinking Schools and Race Forward for a virtual political education training and discussion on the challenges and possibilities of social justice unionism. Examining North Carolina as a case study, guest speaker Bryan Proffitt will ground attendees in the historical context of education in the South and offer building-level organizing tools and strategies to help build power in your buildings, unions, and beyond. ⁠

The session will also include breakout conversations where attendees can collaborate, reflect on their own contexts, and brainstorm ways to implement and adapt these strategies. ⁠

Did you know that in January 2012 Rethinking Columbus was banned in Tucson, Arizona? It was one of the seven texts adopted by Tucson’s outstanding Mexican American Studies program. Administrators entered classrooms and confiscated books — including Rethinking Columbus — from students.

Rethinking Schools joined an amicus brief in support of the program and in 2017 federal Judge A. Wallace Tashima ruled the program’s ban was motivated by “racial animus” against Latinos.

Since then, Rethinking Schools has continued to support the ethnic studies movement with the publication of Rethinking Bilingual Education (2017) and Rethinking Ethnic Studies (2019).
