✨ That’s a wrap on Living Echo Summer Camp! ✨

Six weeks. Five mediums. Creating. Exploring. Imagining. Performing.

Last Thursday, our young artists took over the gallery to share their work with friends, family, and community—and what a celebration it was!

🎨 Paper Mâché & Sculpture with Ceci Tejeda— Larger-than-life paper mâché inspired by Pop Art and colorful alebrijes rooted in cartonería.

🧩 Mixed Media Installation with Melissa Dorn — Sculptures, large mixed media installations, and flat work including weaving that transformed ideas into immersive art.

🎭 Drawn to Drama with Iona Fabian — Poetry, short stories, and a camper created play inspired by Romeo & Juliet, complete with handmade backdrops, costumes, and props.

🎉 Elements of Celebration with Kandis Early — Personal shields, slime paintings, and a piñata brought color, play, and plenty of celebration to the gallery.

🖼️ Living Studio Art History with Jeff Zimpel — Students followed the echo of art history from the caves to contemporary art, drawing inspiration from artists and creative traditions across time.

We’re so proud of everything our young artists created—and grateful to everyone who helped make this summer of Living Echo one to remember!

☀️ Summer Camp Living Echo Spotlight

Week 5 highlights Living Studio Art History Sessions.

Summercampers have been working with artist-educator Jeff Zimpel to dive into the history of art. A true living echo, campers investigate traditions and techniques spanning thousands of years with an emphasis on engagement with the living landscape. Jeff believes art history from distant times and cultures is a key to sustaining our art practice as we tend to our own artistic voice.

"Instead of working on flat neutral surfaces, we teach our hands to be responsive to dynamic forms with stone and branches. Instead of working with commercial paints and brushes, we make marks with earth pigments using driftwood and horse hair tools. Instead of using letterforms to make sentences, we unearth the references to the living world in the alphabet and imagine what inspired our letters in the first place. Instead of creating individualistic works of art, we co-create compositions like an ecosystem. Instead of focusing on our creations as lifeless objects, we turn our art into shadow puppets, casting scenes and stories to ignite our collective imagination."
