A National Catholic Prison Outreach
Bringing faith, prayer, and scripture resources to individuals who are incarcerated and to the dedicated ministers supporting their spiritual journey. It strives for restorative justice through projects that foster the spiritual transformation of inmates, which in turn has a positive effect on everyone affected by crime - offenders, victims, their families and the community. Dismas Ministry serves the incarcerated by supplying the free scripture and faith materials needed to rebuild lives on a solid spiritual footing.

El Ministro Dismas es una Organización Divulgativa Católica a nivel nacional para reclusos. Se esfuerza en justicia restaurativa a través de proyectos que fomentan transformaciones espirituales de los reclusos, que en cambio han tenido un efecto positivo en todos los que han sido afectados por el crimen-- ofensores, víctimas, sus familias y la comunidad. El Ministro Dismas sirve a los encarcelados en proveer Sagradas Escrituras, y materiales religiosos necesitados para reconstruir vidas sólidas en base espiritual.

A Bible can be the first glimpse of hope someone has experienced in a long time.

We received a beautiful testimonical from Chaplain Sam Faraone. He shares how Scripture helps individuals who are incarcerated find peace amid fear, strength in loneliness, and the courage to begin again. Its pages offer a powerful reminder: they are not forgotten, forgiveness is possible, and God is still at work in their lives.

“I never planned on doing prison ministry,” says Dismas Ministry board member Deacon Jim Matthias. “But God opened the door, and I walked through it. And I’ve been blessed ever since.”

For more than 15 years, Jim has walked alongside individuals who are incarcerated, bringing Holy Communion, leading Bible studies, and taking time to listen.

His reflection on these encounters says so much about the ministry:

“The men are welcoming and enthusiastic about opening the Word of God. I hope it is as inspiring for them as it is for me.”

We are grateful for the experience, faith, and compassion Jim brings to our Board of Directors. His story reminds us how an unexpected invitation can become a meaningful calling.

During this Month of the Holy Rosary, we invite you to add a special intention to your prayers. 📿

Pray for individuals who are incarcerated. Pray for their families. Pray for chaplains, volunteers and all those who walk alongside them.

Pray that every person behind prison walls may know the mercy of Christ and the dignity that comes from being a beloved child of God.

Throughout this month's series, we have shared Rosary artwork created by men and women who are incarcerated and who generously shared their art with Dismas Ministry. Their beautiful work reminds us that prayer, faith and hope reach far beyond prison walls.

Join Catholic Prison Ministries Coalition on Saturday, October 17, for The Grace in Showing Up, a free, live online Day of Prayer with Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, Fr. Dustin Feddon, and facilitator Lori Becker.

This gathering welcomes all who accompany individuals who are incarcerated and their families, along with anyone seeking a deeper life with God.

Invite a friend or gather a group to pray together. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

“Hi, I’m Aubrie Miller! I am a junior at Alverno College and am majoring in communications and minoring in art. I chose Dismas Ministry for my internship to deepen my understanding of the world around me while developing and applying my communication skills.”

Through the mysteries of the Rosary, we reflect on the life, ministry, suffering, death and Resurrection of Jesus. For individuals who are incarcerated, these mysteries can offer something especially meaningful: a way to bring their own lives, struggles and hopes into prayer.

Our downloadable Rosary Guide makes it easy to keep the prayers and mysteries close at hand. It is available in both English and Spanish on the Dismas Ministry website. Prison ministers may also order rosaries from Dismas Ministry to share with the individuals they serve. Beautiful work is happening through ministries dedicated to supporting individuals who are incarcerated. 💙

Dismas Ministry is pleased to introduce Creative Options Ministries, which offers self-help correspondence courses mailed lesson by lesson to men and women in California prisons. They also serve individuals in other locations.

Their courses address parenting, anger management, and recovery. If you minister in California or know someone who is incarcerated there, this could be a good option to explore.

Take some time to visit their new website to learn more about their courses and where they are available. Please share with someone who may benefit!
