Results revealed that women combat veterans are at high risk for childhood adversity and potentially traumatic events (PTEs) during military service, as compared to non combat veterans. Clinicians should pay attention to the cumulative nature of PTEs and their associations with PTSD and CPTSD symptoms among women veterans. To***co use, and cigarette smoking in particular, is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. There have been significant declines in cigarette use in the general and Veteran populations, however the prevalence of to***co use remains relatively high, especially among Veterans with PTSD. Evidence indicates that to***co use exacerbates symptoms of PTSD and smoking cessation reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, PTSD providers may not feel they have adequate skills to provide behavioral counseling to assist with cessation.

The Department of Veterans Affairs recommends integrating screening for su***de risk into all clinical settings and is working to do so throughout its health-care system.

Interventions to reduce su***de risk include programs to develop a safety plan for emergency room patients and to connect military members to psychological care at moments of career transition.

Psychologists are also working to understand how to support veterans in their communities who are receiving care outside of VA health-care settings. Read more: https://www.apa.org/monitor/2020/01/ce-corner-su***de
