Midtown Neighborhood Alliance is a resident-led community 501(c3) organization that works to advance the safety, well-being, unity and development of Midtown's residents and community, located in the heart of the city. We

are one of the largest residential neighborhoods in Milwaukee and home to 3 parks, over 10 schools and churches and a diverse array of cultures. Per Milwaukee Historian John Gurda, “Midtown is set squarely in the heart of
the city and a perennial meeting place, a neighborhood where the historical, geographic and social currents in Milwaukee have always mingled, and the results is a character more complex than you’d find in communities several times Midtown’s size.”

On Milwaukee’s North Side, a group of local handymen is teaching kids practical life skills while offering mentorship and support to families who often carry that responsibility alone.

Handyman Academy, founded in 2025 by Daniel McHenry and AJ Batchelor, equips youths with hands-on skills like basic home repair, car care and tool safety, while also providing structure, encouragement and real-world guidance. The program was created with single-parent households in mind, especially families seeking positive outlets and role models for their children.

Students meet weekly, learn through practical projects and leave the program with both confidence and a personal toolkit. Organizers say the goal is not just job skills, but helping kids build independence, teamwork and ambition while staying focused and supported.

"Racially restrictive covenants contained language in property deeds that prevented the sale of land or homes to Black people and people of other ethnicities. They were in place for decades across America to keep certain areas exclusively white, including in many Milwaukee suburbs. The covenants help explain Milwaukee County's low rate of Black suburbanization and its deep segregation."
