SDS UWM stands in solidarity with Nadia Topete, an Immigrants’ Rights Activist and Centro CSO member. On July 1st, Nadia was served a second subpoena ordering her to appear before a grand jury on July 8th. She had previously been served to testify and rightly refused.

This is yet another attempt by the Trump Administration and the DoJ to punish Anti-ICE activism alike to their attempts to bring bogus charges against Alejandro Orellana last year, and may be an attempt to reexamine that case.

Grand Juries are a tool of repression frequently used against activists which do not allow you witnesses, a lawyer, or the ability to present a defense, and they force defendants to implicate themselves, which can lead to potential jail time. People who resist grand juries are heroes!

Nadia Topete did nothing wrong by protesting against the ICE occupation of LA, and she did nothing wrong by refusing to speak in front of a grand jury.
