When "The Snowman" by Erich Korngold (1897 – 1957) debuted in Vienna in 1910, it was representative of the many cultural contributions Jews made to pre-WWII Vienna - a world that sadly changed forever after N**i Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and immediately began persecuting the country's Jews.

HERC will explore this significant history when we partner with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for their October 9th and 10th concerts: Made In America: Korngold and Rachmaninoff. These concerts will feature Erich Korngold's Violin Concerto (1945), alongside works by Barber and Rachmaninoff.

Today is Mildred Fish Harnack Day in Wisconsin.

Born in Milwaukee on September 16, 1902, Mildred studied at UW–Madison before moving to Berlin with her husband, Arvid. As the N**is rose to power, the couple quietly built a resistance network they called "The Circle." Its members published an underground newsletter and passed along intelligence to help defeat Hi**er. Mildred was arrested in 1942 and executed on February 16, 1943, on Hi**er's personal order. She was the only American executed by direct orders from Hi**er.

To carry her story forward, HERC's TeachHolocaust offers a free lesson plan, "The Circle," that introduces Mildred and invites learners to reflect on what it means to stand up against injustice.
