Cards Behind Bars - Wisconsin

Each month, we have more and more letters coming in from prisons all over Wisconsin. Cards Behind Bars corresponds back and forth with each and every last one on a weekly basis.

Sometimes we locate reentry resources and other times we might coordinate a housing plan with their PO prior to their release. Then there's letters we send that are, more or so, supportive letters to show care and concern. Allowing them a safe space to vent and lean in - is cruicial!

If you are interested in becoming a Reentry Correspondence Volunteer, please message us. We have so many individuals writing each week, that we need a few extra hands at writing and typing letters. We'll provide all materials and training for reentry correspondence.

Hey Everyone- help is needed, please SHARE!

We were originally scheduled to drop off cards tomorrow at one of the correctional facilities. They called this afternoon to inform us that, although we've been able to do this for the last few years, they were not able to approve for this year.

Which means, we have a 915 card batch that needs postage so we can mail them out asap - yikes!

Wow!

We had one of our largest turnouts, this weekend, at the annual Holiday Card Writing Workshop!! It's amazing at how many people showed up to support this project and the justice-impacted community.

We had guests travel in from Washington, Nevada, and from Michigan to attend! A number of participants who attended were once housed in the same institutions where we mail and drop off cards at.

We even had an individual attend this year, who was once a recipient of a CBB card in 2021 and 2022. What a blessing to have them at the event, as a card writer and volunteer. It's a true testament to the appreciation of receiving a supportive card during a challenging time in their life. Having them in attendance was truly a full circle moment!

..We'd like to express our gratitude for CRC, for allowing Cards Behind Bars to use their office to host our event.
..Big SHOUT Out to TARGET for their unwavering support each year! Target and it's Crew Members' generosity is incredible! Thank you!!
..and I cannot forget to give props to everyone who helped set up, organize, and take down the event. It was no small task, that's for sure, but oh so worth it!

We were able to finish writing in ALL of the donated cards at the event this year! Amazing, right?!!

We've received card packages this week from North Carolina, Texas, and California! We also have attendees flying in from Vancouver and Nevada to attend this year! Today is Giving Tuesday!

We are less than two weeks away for our annual Holiday Card Writing Workshop on December 9th, 2023! At this workshop we hand write encouraging messages in Christmas cards that we send out to justice impacted women in the Wisconsin Prison System. This year we will be mailing (and dropping off) cards all over the State.

We are still in need of card donations and card writers. If you or someone you know would be interested in making a donation or volunteering at our workshop on December 9th, please check out the information attached in the comment section.
