Amy’s love of weather began at age 8 on a car trip with her parents. She began her work with the National Weather Service in the early 1990’s as a student trainee while still attending Northern Illinois University. Amy was the fir

st female Port Meteorological Officer and served in that role for 15 years. As PMO, Amy worked to increase the accuracy of data collection and forecasts for the Great Lakes, and for her efforts she was bestowed the National Weather Services’ highest honor, The Kline Award in 2007. Recently she managed a wide network of volunteer Cooperative Observers in 28 counties in the greater Chicago area. She regularly gave presentations and taught classes to groups such as the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, International Shipmasters Association, Great Lakes Captains Association, and various yacht clubs. She was an active member of several of these organizations. If you are a boater and ever took a safety class, in the Chicago and Milwaukee area, there is a good chance Amy was your instructor at some point. If you ever visited a tornado awareness event in the Chicago area and purchased a weather radio, there is a good chance Amy was there to teach you how to program it. She greatly enjoyed helping people be prepared to receive life-saving information. Amy was regularly quoted in print and interviewed on radio and TV during special weather events. Amy collected cow calendars, mugs and figurines. She loved her cats Jake, Elwood and Sox. She liked NASCAR racing, the Chicago White Sox and brewing beer. Sadly, Amy passed away August 17, 2019 at the age of 49.

6 Years Without You 💔

Today marks six years since you passed, and not a day goes by that I don’t think of you. Time has moved forward, but the void left behind without you is vast.

Your laughter, your love, your wisdom — they still echo in my heart and in the little moments of everyday life. I miss your presence, your voice, and the comfort you brought.

Though you’re no longer with me in this world, your spirit lives on in everything I do and in every memory I hold close. Thank you for continuing to watch over me, the love you gave, the lessons you taught, and the strength you left behind.

Forever loved. Forever missed.

Thank You!

A little over five years ago following the unexpected passing of my friend Amy Seeley, I embarked on a mission to honor her accomplishments, as a weather forecaster, port meteorological officer, advisor to the Great Lakes shipping industry, and educator to the recreational boating community.

During her thirty-year carrier with the National Weather Service, mostly in the Chicago office, she received multiple promotions and awards for her dedication, hard work, and perseverance.

Amy wrote forecasts, did interviews, managed the Chicago NWS web pages and social media posts, the weather service booth at trade shows, and many other functions at the Chicago Office.

For 15 of those years, she served as the NWS Port Meteorological Officer for the Great Lakes. In this role she installed and maintained weather equipment on ships, then trained crews how to submit observations. In 2007 Amy received a prestigious national Cline Award for her aggressive outreach to increase the Voluntary Observing Ship Reports.

She taught boaters safety classes for the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Powers Squadrons and held elected and appointed offices in both of those organizations. Amy also served as technical editor of the United States Power Squadrons Weather Course. She presented weather seminars to meetings of the Great Lakes Captains Association and the International Shipmasters.

To honor this remarkable woman, I felt it would be appropriate to establish a scholarship at the University she attended and spoke so fondly of. Thus, the Amy Gustafson Seeley Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc was incorporated in October 2019 to assist students at Northern Illinois University to further their academic studies in the field of Atmospheric Sciences.

Over the last five years I am happy to report that the fund has given Northern Illinois University over $10,000 to award as scholarships while the fund worked to raise the $50,000 needed to endow the scholarship in perpetuity at NIU.

Because of the generosity of friends, family, co-workers, members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Ninth Western Region, and the many others who loved her and valued her friendship and accomplishments, I am thrilled to report that today a check for $50,000 is being sent to the NIU foundation to endow the Amy Gustafson Memorial Scholarship. With this endowment she and her accomplishments will be remembered for as long as the university exists.

Our mission is not finished, this fund will continue to raise funds to add to the endowment, who knows what the future will bring.

Words cannot express my gratitude to all who have donated to make this happen. It could not be possible without you.

From its humble beginnings, as a club-within-a-club in the early 1900s, today’s organization with over 20,000 members, is a private, self-supporting, non-profit, fraternal boating organization headquartered in Raleigh, NC. From basics to advanced topics, classes are available to members and the general public. It is had to believe that it has been four years since you left us. it seems like just yesterday we were sharing hopes, dreams, and plans. It is comforting to know that your perpetual light continues to illuminate the darkness in cathedrals, and basilicas in Rome, and Milwaukee.

Your memory lives in the hearts of the many who generously donate to the scholarship fund established in your name. This financial support serves to lesson the monetary burden to students at Northern Illinois University who study to be the next generation of atmospheric scientists. In 2028 if the design and funding phases continue on track, the keel will be laid on the R/V Amy Seeley. The new built vessel will provide a state of the art platform for research into the forces that drive ocean, climate, and weather interaction for decades into the future.

We all miss you and think of you every day.
