Indigenous Health International

Indigenous Health International IHI also works to understand the specific social determinants of health and social risk factors associated with health outcomes within each population served.

Indigenous Health International (IHI) is a United States IRS approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to meet the health care needs of indigenous communities around the world. Indigenous Health International’s (IHI) mission is to meet the health care needs of Indigenous Peoples around the world by partnering with Indigenous communities to treat existing physical, mental, and socia

l needs in a way that respects cultural history and provides for the future. The nearly 400 million Indigenous Peoples that live in over 70 countries around the world are some of the most marginalized and neglected people on our planet, accounting for about 15% of the world’s poor though only 5% of its population. IHI works to address both medical and social needs faced by this population by collaborating with on-site community stakeholders (I.E., health care providers, community leaders, liaisons) in multiple countries around the world (I.E., Panama, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Malawi, Kenya). Past and current work by IHI includes conducting thorough needs assessments within each country and community, and collaborating with key stakeholders, Ministry of Health leaders, and community members to determine high priority areas of focus. IHI is working to establish and maintain partnerships and collaborations to improve the physical and mental health of Indigenous Peoples through the provision of medical services (I.E., medications to treat chronic disease, treatment of common ailments and infections), eye and sunglass distribution, deworming and vitamin supplementation for school-aged children, and community health education. IHI is working to address social needs by finding ways to improve access to potable water and sanitation, addressing nutrition, and poor living conditions while respecting the cultural heritage and context of the environment.

At IHI, we believe that caring for the health of Indigenous communities means working with them—not just providing care, but partnering in a way that honors their history and builds a healthier future. We know that good health isn’t just about medicine—it’s also about things like education, clean water, and safe living environments. That’s why we focus on the full picture: physical, mental, and social health, and we work alongside communities to address the root causes of health challenges.

Support Indigenous Health International!
IHI believes to meet the health 🩺 care needs of Indigenous communities 🌍 around the world, we need to partner with Indigenous communities and treat physical, mental, and social needs in a way that respects the past and provides for the future of this population. We believe that health care for Indigenous Peoples needs to address social determinants of health which underlie poor health outcomes in the community. Thus, we also work with our partners to improve education, sanitation, and environmental health. We serve to unlock resources and open doors to healthcare for Indigenous People around the world.

Dear Friend of Indigenous Health International,

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Indigenous Health International (IHI) mission to meet the health care needs of Indigenous communities around the world. As mentioned in our previous correspondence, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented our team from traveling to our partnering countries to conduct our medical and research initiatives. However, we successfully published and presented manuscripts on diabetes and cardiovascular disease in sub-Saharan African countries and have launched a successful social media campaign to raise awareness on issues affecting Indigenous Peoples globally.

IHI is in the process of scheduling trips for 2023 to re-engage with our community partners including the Kuna Ipeti, Embera Ipeti, Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca and Kuna Yala in Panama, and in Lebanon to establish a plan to address community-based needs and concerns. We are also looking forward to traveling to Belize, Guatemala, Kenya, and Malawi to meet with new partners, community leaders, and leadership at various Ministries of Health to learn about specific community needs, explore feasibility of working with individual communities, and begin building partnerships to address health and health care needs.

In light of Giving Day, a predominately online fundraising opportunity for non-profit organizations celebrated on the 1st Tuesday after Thanksgiving, we would like to ask you to consider donating your gift to IHI to be used to provide much needed services for our existing partners and help build infrastructure necessary to realize our goals of partnering with four new countries. Please see below for information about how your gift may be used:

• $25, $50, or $100 to purchase glasses for the residents of the communities
• $50, $75, $100, or $250 to purchase fetal Dopplers or nebulizers for the clinics
• $50-$200 to purchase medications including antibiotics, pain medication, and blood pressure medicine
• $50, $75, or $100 to purchase digital blood pressure machines to allow community screening for hypertension
• $250 to purchase a glucose meter and testing strips for 6 months to help support blood sugar control for individuals with diabetes
• $50-$250 to purchase farming supplies and seed to help support the community farming project on the Kuna island of Ustupu
• $100-$500 to support the new water system to be installed on the Kuna islands of Ustupu and Ogobsucum
• $200-$1,000 to cover travel expenses for a student to accompany the team in 2023
Donations can be made online through our website, https://indigenoushealthinternational.net/donate or be sent via mail to Indigenous Health International, 2224 West Kilbourne Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53233. All gifts are tax-deductible.

Sincerely,
