The Milwaukee Police Association has repeatedly warned that the City’s growing pattern of quickly settling police-related lawsuits, often for substantial sums, is unfair to both taxpayers and the officers involved. News of this most recent proposed settlement only reinforces those concerns.
Every case deserves to be evaluated on its own facts and legal merits, but time and again, the City appears more willing to write checks with taxpayer dollars than fully defend the actions of Milwaukee police officers, even in cases involving complex legal questions and legitimate defenses.
These repeated settlements send a damaging message to our officers who put themselves in difficult and dangerous situations every day. They also raise serious questions about whether the City Attorney’s Office is committed to vigorously defending these cases through litigation when appropriate, rather than defaulting to costly settlements that ultimately come out of the pockets of Milwaukee taxpayers.
The Milwaukee Police Association has already formally raised concerns about what we view as a troubling pattern of inadequate legal strategy and premature settlements in police-related matters.
The citizens of Milwaukee deserve accountability not only in policing, but also in how taxpayer dollars are being spent. At some point, City leaders must explain why settlement after settlement appears to be viewed as the easiest option, regardless of the broader impact on public confidence, officer morale, and the City’s financial obligations.
Milwaukee's city attorney recommended a $575,000 settlement for a couple that was the victim of a harassment scheme known as 'swatting.'
