Meet Emily Oberst, a force of nature whose story defines what it means to turn a challenge into a championship. At just 12 years old, Emily was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma. After grueling treatment protocols, she didn’t just survive - she found her calling far beyond the court.

When Dr. Federico of St. Jude's joined us for an episode of Ewing's U in 2023, she shared very hopeful data - many Warriors on the ANGIO1 protocol showed stable disease for a long period of time.

To be clear, it's not likely to be curative, but this protocol can help bridge the gap while waiting for a different trial, or for warriors who just need a break from aggressive treatments.

This Warrior Wednesday belongs to Rod, who's celebrating 11 years since ringing the bell. 🔔 💛

"JUNE 23, 2014, is a date I will always remember. It marked the beginning of a 15-month journey to battle and defeat Ewing Sarcoma, with the shocking discovery of a tumor on my T10 vertebra. We are excited, uplifted, and more than grateful to be celebrating my upcoming eleventh year anniversary of ringing the bell - cancer-free - as of September, 2015.

In July of 2015, becoming part of Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma (PCS) while still undergoing treatment, we first gathered as our run team, NEVER MIND THE BO****KS LET'S CURE SARCOMA, to raise the much-needed research funds for combating this dreadful disease, only 1% of all known cancers, which yearly afflicts 15,000 people, 6,000 of whom tragically lose their valiant battles."

𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗡𝗚𝗦) 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻. But it can become 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 later.

For Ewing's Sarcoma, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) isn’t about first-line treatment… yet. So most hospitals only offer the standard sequencing - the one that simply confirms “Yes, this is Ewings.”

Whereas NGS can help identify mutations or pathways to your child’s unique tumor. Without that information, families can lose precious time searching for next steps during relapse, when time matters most.

𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀:
• You already know your child’s tumor profile (although tumors do evolve!)
• You can act faster if things change
• You’re not starting from scratch in a crisis

This isn’t about replacing standard treatment. It’s about being prepared for what comes next.

𝗦𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺:
• Has genomic sequencing been done or planned?
• Will we have this information if we need it later?

Because in a disease like Ewing's Sarcoma, information can make all the difference.

Let's talk about ANGIO1. 👇

Back in 2023, Dr. Sara Federico joined us for an Ewing's U session to discuss this groundbreaking approach to stabilize relapsed or refractory Ewing's Sarcoma.

In a nutshell, the ANGIO1 regimen:
➡️ Is a low-dose chemotherapy & immunotherapy using cyclophosphamide, sorafenib, and bevacizumab IV
➡️ Targets blood vessel growth
➡️ Stimulates an immune response
➡️ Provides a little reprieve between aggressive treatments
➡️ Can be issued by any oncologist

The last time doctors had a new frontline treatment option for Ewing's Sarcoma, you could still light up a cigarette on a commercial flight.

A lot has changed since then. And yet, when it comes to treating this disease, we're still working from the same 1980s playbook.

These kids deserve better than a protocol that their grandparents' generation developed. One day, we'll look back at THIS moment and ask: "How did we ever think that was okay?"
