MCAN affiliate Berkshire Interfaith Organizing was grateful to join the inaugural Housing Abundance Symposium panel, “How to Make a Campaign Out of an Ordinance,” sharing lessons from organizing around Pittsfield’s Median Safety Ordinance and proposed Camping on Public Property Ordinance.

At the heart of that work is the Homes Not Handcuffs Coalition—faith communities, organizers, service providers, advocates, and directly affected residents united around dignity.

Together, they challenged punitive policies and shifted the conversation toward public health, outreach, housing, and thoughtful long-term solutions. That took relationships, testimony, public pressure, and credible alternatives.

Seeing the coalition receive the symposium’s Rookie of the Year award was especially meaningful. The recognition belongs to everyone who organized around a shared belief: our city can respond to homelessness with more dignity and imagination.

Today, leaders with MCAN’s Second Chance Justice campaign held a press conference at the State House, calling on Governor Maura Healey to act on her own words in support of clemency.

Their message was clear: “Gov. Healey, follow the recommendations of your Advisory Board of Pardons and approve the next step for our brothers. Justice can’t wait.”

Edward Fielding, Scott Kirwan, and Randy Arias have each received a favorable recommendation for commutation from the Governor’s Advisory Board of Pardons—and waited two to three years for the Governor to act.

Following the press conference, leaders, including William Allen and Ramadan Shabazz who received commutations from Gov. Baker in 2022, took that message straight into the Governor’s Executive Chambers.

Justice can’t wait. Neither should they.

Governor Healey’s words carry a promise. It’s time to fulfill it.

Edward Fielding, Scott Kirwan, and Randy Arias have done the work to transform their lives. The Governor’s Advisory Board of Pardons thoroughly reviewed their records and recommended reducing their sentences through commutation. Yet those recommendations remain unresolved after two to three years.

Second Chance Justice is calling on Governor Healey to honor her commitment to fairness, equity, and rehabilitation—and approve their commutations without further delay.

Justice can’t wait. Neither should they.
