MCAN - Massachusetts Communities Action Network

MCAN - Massachusetts Communities Action Network MCAN-a network of nine faith & values based affiliates working for racial equity & economic justice.

MCAN partners at the nationally with Faith in Action, which is also a 501c(3). We are non-partisan and do not endorse or support candidates for office. For our current campaign, Massachusetts Faith Voices, we are working with the Raise Up Massachusetts coalition to raise the minimum wage in MA to $15/hr, and to ensure the right to earn up to five sick days per year for all MA workers. This would r

aise the wages of 600,000 workers, and gain sick time for 1 million. Massachusetts Faith Voices is bringing in congregations and denominational groups across the state to help make the words of the prophet Isaiah that "they shall not labor in vain" (Isaiah 65:23) a reality. MCAN (Massachusetts Communities Action Network) is a a federation of community improvement organizations across Massachusetts working for social and economic justice by putting our religious faith values and our democratic values into action. MCAN is an affiliate of PICO, a national network of faith-based community organizations working to create innovative solutions to problems facing urban, suburban and rural communities.

Listen in as our national partner Faith in Action is on the ground with our sister federation Faith in New Jersey at Delaney Hall, ICE detention center. This building which had been closed for two years after powerful organizing was brought back into use just over a year ago. The space is meant to detain 400 people. There have been over 1000 there in recent weeks held in inhumane conditions.

Whatever the question,
community organizing is likely the answer.

At the heart of powerful organizing is having a solid set of training skills to move mindsets and build movements.

Join MCAN for a four day gathering to focus on the art of training. Exercises are designed to hone skills as a trainer and identify key elements of effective training. The training also centers topics such as agitation, triggers, and offering/receiving effective feedback.

This training is for organizers and grassroots leaders who are currently offering trainings to others or will be in the near future. Each participant must come with 1-2 trainings prepared to be worked on over the course of the training sessions.

MCAN's Second Chance Justice campaign leaders William Allen, Ramon Durham, Kris McDonald and Joe Moore returned to the State House last Thursday to meet with members of Governor Healey's executive team representing the policy, public safety, corrections, and legal teams. This meeting follows SCJ's submission of a report to the Governor's office in April entitled The Time Is Now with recommendations to reimagine systems of clemency and reentry in Massachusetts. The leader team delivered over 300 signatures from across the state and throughout the U.S. in support of these recommendations.

Yesterday, Governor Maura Healey issued statewide guidance on interacting with ICE for places of worship, schools, child care providers, health care facilities and higher education campuses. Following a meeting with the Governor and executive staff, MCAN's faith leaders of the Protect Our People campaign were asked to review and contribute to the guidelines released yesterday for congregational spaces.

“This guidance should not be necessary,” the Rev. Mariama White-Hammond, founding pastor of the New Roots AME Church and a core member of MCAN's Faith Leader Caucus said at the press conference. “Many of us follow a higher law that is thousands of years old. And we will not let any political agenda of the moment draw us away from those higher principles — this guidance reminds us how we lean in to following those things to which we have dedicated our lives.”
