Join us for an engaging and informative talk with Chad Witko, ornithologist and founder of Birding University, about how New Hampshire’s lakes serve as vital lifelines for migratory birds.

Discover the unique ecological role these lakes play in fueling long-distance journeys. Also learn about the species that depend on them, and explore the conservation challenges they face.

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or simply curious about the natural world, this session will deepen your understanding of bird migration and highlight the hemispheric importance of New Hampshire’s lakes.

Join us online on Wednesday, August 20, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required (and FREE!), and space is limited.

As the weather warms and school ends, activities like boating and swimming increase dramatically on New Hampshire’s plentiful freshwater resources. NHDES encourages the public to check the Healthy Swimming Mapper before heading out for your favorite freshwater recreational activities. The mapper provides the most current information about f***l bacteria advisories and cyanobacteria blooms. New this year, the mapper will display individual cyanobacteria bloom reports as triangles color-coded to match bloom severity. The triangles on the map are “clickable” to learn more about individual reports by location on a waterbody.

As in past years, everyone is encouraged to report observations of cyanobacteria to NHDES. Cyanobacteria blooms are extremely dynamic and can change in severity and location rapidly, so learning what to look for is important to keep yourself, your family, pets and livestock safe.

To view the mapper, and to access the Bloom Report Form, visit: https://www.des.nh.gov/water/healthy-swimming/healthy-swimming-mapper

The statewide NH Lakes Lake Host Program already made its first save on Granite Lake. Three Ponds Boaters, please make sure you inspect your boats both going in and coming out of all waterbodies! The cost of managing European Naiad in Milton Three Ponds has exceeded $600,000 over the last nine years...we do not want another invasive species coming in and we don't want our neighboring waterbodies to face the same problems. Please CLEAN, DRAIN and DRY your boats. Watch this short video (https://threeponds.net/boat-inspections/) to understand how a boat inspection works and do your part to make sure that all boats are properly inspected!

We’re both excited and alarmed to report the first aquatic invasive species interception of the summer, thanks to the vigilance of the Lake Host Program!

A few weeks ago, Lake Host Zack Rioux spotted suspicious plant fragments clinging to a boat trailer just before it was launched into Granite Lake, one of New Hampshire’s pristine, invasive-free lakes. Thanks to Zack’s sharp eye and thorough inspection, he removed several plants, potentially stopping a devastating infestation in the lake before it could start.

In the photo, three different plant species were found, and one is confirmed to be invasive in New Hampshire. While we can’t tell from the image whether it's Hydrilla or Brazilian elodea, both are harmful invaders. Our partners at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services couldn’t make a definitive ID either, but they agree that it's trouble.

The boat’s last launch? Spofford Lake, another invasive-free lake. Now, W**d Watchers from both the Granite Lake and Spofford Lake Associations are on high alert, monitoring shallow areas to make sure no invasive plants have snuck in.

Huge thanks to Zack for being on duty. And a round of applause to all boaters helping protect our lakes by cleaning, draining, and drying their boats, trailers, and gear between waterbodies.
