Connect Milton

Connect Milton Town of Milton, MA community connection centered around DEIJB and civic engagement.

Tonight, Jessica McDaniel spoke on behalf of Connect Milton's steering committee at citizens speak at Milton's Planning Board meeting, because at the April 23rd meeting of this board, incorrect statements were made about us, specifically the nature of our activities, and our funding sources. Unfortunately some of that misinformation has since filtered into the community, so we wanted to introduce ourselves to clear up any confusion for members of the board, Town Staff, as well as residents.

Are you curious? Wanna peek inside one of our welcome bags? We distributed 116 of these tonight to our wonderful volunteers at Steel & Rye - they’re taking them and delivering them by hand to residents who’ve moved to town in the last six months. Here’s what’s inside!

Hello Neighbors!

Now that election season is over, we are looking ahead to Connect Milton's spring activities and want to clear up some misinformation that's been circulating.

Connect Milton was started in 2023 with the goal of fostering a more engaged and connected community centered around diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and civic engagement. We exist to connect Milton residents to each other, to civic engagement opportunities and to community resources.

We are a non-partisan group focused on community engagement. We are not a political group, but we do educate the community about our town's political process. We host events on how our town government works and how to run for town office. We share information about upcoming elections, including where and how to vote. We also post a list of candidates running for major local boards along with their website if they have one. We do not endorse candidates.

We have a fiscal sponsor, Social Good. We are not funded by them. Our revenue is generated by sponsors of our bi-annual Welcome to Milton bags and donations. We are an autonomous program of Social Good - they are a large non-profit. We are able to use their 501c3 status to make purchases tax-free. Also, with this status, donor's contributions are tax deductible.

We will host our Volunteer Meet-Up on Thursday, May 14th at 7:30pm at Steel and Rye. Please join us if you would like to participate in our Spring Welcome to Milton weekend, May 15th - 17th. Volunteers will distribute Welcome Bags to new residents to welcome them to town. You will receive your bags and household assignment that night. RSVP at the link in the first comment.

If you would like to learn more about us or get more involved, visit our website at the link in the second comment, and definitely sign up to hear from us in our email newsletters.

We had a great turnout and a super fun time at Connect Milton's first Community Co****le event tonight. Gotta love that renting Heritage Hall means we get a bartender and a cash bar for events we host there. 💃🕺

We all needed some non-shovel-related movement this week, and this was just what the doctor ordered! Hanging out with friends, snacks and co****le. Perfect!

🚩I’m not ready to run for office, but I’d like to get more involved – what can I do?

➡️ Vote! Voter turnout at local elections in Milton is usually only 20-30% of registered voters, so your vote matters!

➡️ Consider volunteering for one of the town’s many boards or committees – you can find a list of them on the town website and Connect Milton has videos that explain more about what each committee does at connectmilton.org/videos

➡️ If you’re thinking that you might be interested in running for office one day, attend or watch the meetings that body or office holds to learn about current issues and how the body/office works.

🚩Do I need to fundraise if I'm going to run for office?

➡️ Town-wide positions will need money to fund their campaign. There are requirements for filing financial reports of campaign activities – more information is available on the town website

➡️ Town Meeting candidates are exempt from these requirements and don’t generally fundraise.

➡️ Many town-wide candidates partially self-fund, and also hold fundraising events to request donations from supporters.

➡️ One way to increase your donations is to make a list of everyone you know (they don’t need to live in Milton) and ask them to support your campaign.

🚩 if I'm going to run for a town office, how do I get people to vote for me?

-- For town-wide positions, start planning in January/February:
➡️ Talk to people already in office, or who have held town-wide office, about their campaign and what they did to get elected.
➡️ Form a committee of key people who support you and start meeting regularly to talk about your platform, advertising, yard signs, fundraising, communication (website, social media), and strategy. A treasurer is critical to your campaign for filing campaign finance reports.

-- Town meeting positions have become very competitive in many precincts, so many town meeting candidates do some kind of additional campaigning.

Some common options include:
➡️ Knocking on doors and talking to your neighbors.
➡️ Make a flyer or postcard to hand out/leave. Tell them why you’re running, and what issues are important to you. Find out what issues are important to them!
➡️ Posting a candidacy announcement in The Milton Times
➡️ Posting on social media about your candidacy, on your own page and/or on local town pages
➡️ Emailing everyone you know in your precinct or neighborhood and ask for their vote (and ask them to tell a friend!)
➡️ Making yard signs
➡️ Standing at the polls on Election Day
