Free Presentation by Rock County Genealogical Society
Program Summary: Writing Your Family History for the Non-writer. Were your ancestors royalty or members of the working class? Were they rich or barely surviving? Whoever they were, their memory deserves preservation. Steve's program will discuss a process and format that make it easier to transform your research efforts into a written family history. Learn a method to easily save your information and tips to help them “come alive.” If we do not preserve our ancestors' memories and stories for future generations, who will?
Program Presenter: Steve Szabados is a genealogy lecturer, author, and a member of the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists, the Illinois State Genealogical Society, and the Polish Genealogical Society of America. He is also a genealogy volunteer at the Arlington Heights, Illinois, Library and the Genealogy Columnist for the Polish American Journal.

Last night Bob Bocke, a retired Wisconsin Crime Lab expert presented on Wisconsin's POW camps, revealing that the state had 38 camps housing over 20,000 German POWs. If you missed it, he provided a copy of his slide show PDF along with the audio recording posted to our website, www.rcgswi.org . Attached is a picture of Camp McCoy drawn by a German POW, and the POW Watch Tower there. . . . discussion covered several topics, including military history and genealogy research. Bob shared information about German POWs during World War II, mentioning the War Resource Board and the challenges of tracking prisoners. He suggested checking the National Archives and local museums for records, noting that some archives were destroyed in the 1950s. The conversation also touched on personal experiences with family members who served in the military and the challenges of accessing historical records due to fires at some archives. Later in the meeting, there was discussion about political topics and advertising, including commentary on a politician's delivery style and various product advertisements.
