Community Creek Cleanup Report - #911-Sewa Day of Service

On February 21, 2026, over 17 volunteers from Sewa International – Bay Area partnered with Living Arroyos for a community creek clean-up at Tranquility Circle, joining a total of 30+ volunteers to help restore and protect the local environment.
Through this collective effort to restore local creeks and surrounding trails, volunteers removed assorted trash, helping protect and rejuvenate the area’s flora and fauna while enhancing the overall well-being of the surrounding community. Volunteers shared a strong sense of pride in contributing meaningfully to environmental stewardship. Living Arroyos staff praised Sewa International for their support and active participation in today’s activity.

Disaster and the First 72 Hours shows how adaptive routing, local partnerships, and on‑the‑spot improvisation can unlock critical resources when conventional systems stall.

Response isn’t just about plans, it is about agility, trust, and operational resilience.
At Sewa’s Policy Cafe, Valerio Carafa highlighted how improvisation and local collaboration ensure that aid flows even when formal systems falter.

Resilience is operational and it saves lives.

Sustainable hunger solutions begin with listening.
As shared by Dr. Daniela Bernaschi at our Hunger Policy Cafe, food systems cannot be reduced to supply chains and statistics. They must be rooted in dignity, agency, and community voice.

When policies are designed with people rather than for them they become more responsive, more inclusive, and more impactful. Centering lived experiences is not optional; it is essential for lasting change.

True progress happens when communities are respected as partners in shaping the solutions that affect their lives.

At Sewa’s Policy Cafe series, leaders reminded us that access to food is not just about calories, it is about dignity, prevention, and stronger communities.
Scott Brummel underscored how integrating food systems, health data, and local innovation can improve outcomes while protecting dignity. Stevens Azima emphasized that resilience, especially in rural communities, depends on solutions shaped by geography, infrastructure realities, and local context not imposed from the outside. Sakeenah Shabazz highlighted how flexible and equitable federal food policy, including programs like SNAP incentives and community nutrition pilots, can empower local actors and strengthen long-term resilience.

True solutions grow from the ground up. Access begins with understanding and real change happens when policy, health, and community leadership move together.

After our Annual Bhaitak (Annual Planning Meeting), a few young volunteers were headed home in an Uber. They were discussing the meeting, reflecting on the vision for the year ahead, and sharing the mission of Sewa International USA and the Cancer Mukti Foundation. They spoke about service, community impact, and the upcoming events with energy and sincerity.

The driver quietly listened, asked thoughtful questions, and shared how moved he felt by the passion in their conversation.

Then, before the ride ended, he reached into his wallet and handed over $15, asking that it be donated toward the cause. No receipt. No recognition. No acknowledgment. Just a simple request to give it on his behalf.

A small amount. A huge heart.

It was a powerful reminder that when service is genuine, it resonates. Sometimes, all it takes is speaking from the heart to turn a stranger into a supporter.

In the first days after a disaster, the real crisis isn’t scarcity it’s simultaneity.
Everything is urgent. Everything is happening at once.
At Sewa’s Policy Cafe, Euan Crawshaw unpacked how responders operate at scale amid limited access, security risks, uncertain funding, and incomplete information.

When pressure is this high, impact depends on one thing: the ability to make the right decisions, fast. Find out the comment of Euan Crawshaw form the disaster policy cafe here https://ow.ly/ujfi50YgTZt

On February 14, Sewa Bay Area hosted an Earthquake Preparedness & Mindfulness workshop with 12 participants, focusing on safety, awareness, and emotional resilience during emergencies.
Teen volunteer Veer, under the guidance of Vikram Kapur, delivered an insightful presentation covering past earthquakes, preparedness steps, and essential safety measures. Participants actively shared experiences and practiced a calming breathing exercise to manage fear during emergencies.

We were honored by a visit from Sherry Hu, who appreciated the youth leadership and encouraged continued community preparedness. The session left participants feeling informed, empowered, and more confident to face emergencies with calm and clarity.
