⚠️ Panleukopenia Is Spreading. Here's Why, and What You Can Do About It.

Rescues around Maine are reporting a rise in panleuk cases, with sick cats and dying kittens coming through their doors. It's highly contagious, often fatal, and it hits young kittens the hardest.

This didn't come out of nowhere. 👇

Maine's Help Fix ME spay/neuter program is supposed to help low-income families and colony caretakers get animals fixed when they can't afford it. But year after year, it hasn't brought in anywhere near enough money to meet the need.

Right now, the state's own website says the program isn't accepting new applications because all current funding is committed. In plain terms, it's out of money. Again.

Here's what that means on the ground:
🐾 Fewer spay/neuter surgeries = more litters
🐾 More litters = more unvaccinated kittens
🐾 More unvaccinated kittens = the perfect conditions for panleuk to spread

Rescues, shelters, and ACOs are dealing with the fallout every day. Small rescues are running out of space and money, and they're doing the state's job without the state's resources.

This is preventable. But it takes pressure from the public.

📣 What you can do:
✅ Contact your State Representative and Senator. Ask them why Maine's spay/neuter program keeps running out of money, and what they'll do to fund it properly so this doesn't keep happening. Find yours at legislature.maine.gov
✅ Share this post so more people understand what's happening
✅ Get your own cats vaccinated with FVRCP. It covers panleuk and it works.

Prevention will always cost less than an outbreak. Our animals and our rescues deserve better than this. 💙

We’ve never had a nursing mom who hated having a blanket in the kennel before. I put one in there for a bit, but she wouldn’t go near it. Once I removed it, she started nursing the little ones. The owner passed away from cancer last week, and the lady who cleaned out the house had very little information, other than the fact that mom hates blankets. 🤷‍♂️

Sharing to help spread the word for volunteers!

🎉 BIG NEWS FOR WEST PARIS 🎉

We've got approval to start moving cats through spay and neuter in real numbers. Ten to fifteen a week at Rescue Charlie's Friends in Woolwich, plus slots at an upcoming community cat clinic with Rozzie May Animal Alliance, with more clinics planned after that.

Every cat gets fixed, vaccinated against rabies, treated for parasites, ear tipped, and returned to its colony. 🐾

💉 Why the rabies piece matters? With confirmed cases in our area recently, every unvaccinated animal living outdoors is a gap between wildlife and your family and your pets. Getting these cats vaccinated is real protection for this community, not just for the cats.

It's also the only thing that actually stops the numbers from climbing instead of chasing the same problem year after year.

🙏 Thank you to Rescue Charlie's Friends and Rozzie May Animal Alliance. Neither one had to take this on, and this does not happen without them.

Now the hard part. 😅

There are hundreds of cats out there across more than two dozen colonies in this town, and right now it's just me. I can't trap, feed, care for, and drive that many cats by myself. Not a chance.

So here's where you come in. 🙌

🐈 VOLUNTEERS
I need people to help trap, people to feed and care for cats before and after surgery, and people to drive to the clinics and back. Some animal welfare or handling experience is preferred, but it is not required. If you're brand new, just say so on the form. I'll train you.

🏠 SHELTERS AND RESCUES
Not every cat out there is feral. Some are friendly, some are kittens, some were somebody's pet once. If your organization wants to be notified when adoptable cats come out of these colonies, get on the list.

All six spay/neuter spots are filled for tomorrow, which includes the mom (pictured) of the three kittens headed to Midcoast! We also received a call from Windsor this morning regarding a mom and nursing kittens left behind when their human passed away yesterday, so the mom and kittens will be headed back north with us tomorrow. It’s been a very successful day, and I am so grateful for our friend Lilly, who took time out of her schedule to catch the three Milo cats.

We love saving kittens before it’s too late! They will be with us until Thursday, and then they are heading down to Midcoast to be neutered and adopted.

We’ve got six spay/neuter spots reserved for the 18th. The property owner trapped these two early in the hope that it’s not too late for them to be socialized. The worst-case scenario is that they are not candidates for adoption, but at least they won’t be making babies outside.

We have six spay/neuter spots reserved for tomorrow and between Milo and Charleston, we have four cats already trapped! 🙌

Today, we're trapping 8 cats at a dairy farm for tomorrow, and in less than 30 minutes, two are trapped! We’ve currently raised $350 of what we expect to be a $700-$900 spay/neuter bill tomorrow.

We recently committed to TNR a colony of approximately 13 cats in Corinth (pictured), which is in addition to the remaining seven or eight cats at the Milo property that we have been working on the past few weeks. We have six spay/neuter spots reserved at PALS on June 18, and we will be trapping on June 17. We appreciate any help to offset the bill!
