We had our final class of the six week program. This group of 4-H kids were so much fun to host. We saw new friendships blossom and a sincere desire to learn more about our natural world.

We started our last meeting discussing the fundamentals of hiking before we did a mini hike in our woodland area.

We had a BBQ then presented completion certificates and a plant to take home.

We will do another six week program in the fall after school starts. Stay tuned for summer programs.

How much fun can you have in two hours?

- We planted carrots in the raised bed that grew roots in jars of water.
- The compost bin was a great place to discuss Compost Lasagne and how it makes great soil.
- The worms are fed and watered.
- The fish are fed but seem to still be living at the bottom of the pond. While on the dock we made Soil Shakes which we later checked after the soil settled in the water. It gave the kids an idea of the different properties of soil, clay and mud. You could clearly see the sand, soil and items floating on top.
- While looking for soil to make the Soil Shakes, we discovered a few worms, the mission of the day turned into finding more worms for the worm bed. We are pleased that nobody was afraid to touch the worms. After all they have a very important job in the soil.
- The kids planted 10 Buttonbush and 10 Spicebush plants in the field that was recently taken out of service. It's a big project but the landscape will take shape and be suitable for a nice little hike.
- The final task of the day was to make Bird Bistros out of pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed. We enjoyed our own snacks while we worked on the bistros.

Overall, it was an action packed morning. Next week is dedicated to ornithology and a lesson on pollinators and sensory gardens.
