Our mission is to coordinate resources to monitor, preserve, protect, and improve water quality.

The Mills River Partnership is a non-profit, non-governmental corporation whose purpose is to provide leadership in addressing water quality issues in the Mills River watershed. The Partnership will further develop cooperation among existing agencies, conservation organizations, agricultural businesses, land owners and residents in the watershed and will enable these groups and the MRP to continuously work together to protect and improve the water supply for consumers and other users.

Mills River Partnership was at Hendersonville Farm City Day in Jackson Park on Saturday and congressional candidate Jamie Ager stopped by to hear about our work protecting Hendersonville and Asheville’s drinking water. We always enjoy talking about the importance of protecting this critical watershed!

Yesterday Mills River Partnership went out with the staff of Mills River Parks & Recreation at the Park to work on some invasive species down by the riverbank. We knocked back a bunch of these guys to give the native species a better chance come springtime.

See that rock in the middle of the south fork of the Mills River? There is probably a hellbender living underneath it. Mills River Partnership has a project restoring the streambank on the near side. It is downriver from the Dalton Road bridge along the south fork of the Mills is an area aptly named Pretty Place. The river winds through flower-strewn fields that provide pollinator and ground bird nesting habitat. However, even before Hurricane Helene this stretch of river was experiencing erosion. After the storm, the banks were severely scoured, vertical and eroding. With funds from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and engineering design by Jennings Environmental, we are in the midst of a project to restore this stretch of river. The work is addressing the eroding banks with bank-sloping and native plants. Natural channel design features will relieve the water’s force off the riverbanks while providing streambed habitat for hellbenders, mussels and fish. We thank the property owners for their commitment to stewardship.

Mills River Partnership volunteers did a great job yesterday pulling over 300 lbs of trash out of the Millls before the rain closed in as part of the WNC Big Sweep river cleanup. Thanks to Asheville GreenWorks for the reused malt bags (does it get more WNC than that?) so we didn’t add additional plastic garbage bags to the landfill. We had a great crew of volunteers out today on Brandy Branch working at the project site on the property of Blue Ridge Humane Society Together we planted hundreds of sedges and other riparian plants stabilizing the banks of this important tributary of the Mills River. Thanks to all our volunteers and our partners at Henderson County Soil & Water Conservation District, NC Land & Water Fund and especially Sierra Nevada who brought the plants and a bunch of person power. That stretch of Brandy Branch never looked better!

Earlier this week we joined NC Wildlife Resources Commission Pisgah River Rangers and Mills River Parks & Recreation to highlight the Blue Ridge Snorkel Trail at Mills River Park. Lots of kids turned out to enthusiastically examine the aquatic life in the Mills River that indicates clean water that we all depend on.

Over 30 volunteers came out yesterday on the North Mills River and planted 1,000 water willows to stabilize a section of stream near the location of a future dam removal project. Thanks to everyone who turned up early on a Tuesday morning with our partners NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Pisgah Natl Forest, Pisgah River Rangers, The Land O' Sky Chapter of Trout Unlimited, The Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and The Nature Conservancy in North Carolina

We’ve got two events going on tomorrow (Tuesday the 25th)! We’re planting willows near the North Mills campground at 8 am and then snorkeling at Mills River Park at 4 pm. No sign up required— just show up! More info on the Mills River Partnership website (link in bio). See you there!

On Wednesday, Mills River Partnership travelled one watershed to the south to snorkel with the Pisgah River Rangers in the Davidson River. We saw all kinds of river life including redhorse suckers, trout, dace, darters and hogsuckers, to name a few. Other partner orgs like The Land O' Sky Chapter of Trout Unlimited The Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited and The Pisgah Conservancy were there. If this looks fun to you, we are helping to host a snorkel experience at Mills River Park on the afternoon of August 25th! More info at our website— link in bio. Mills River Partnership met a lot of good folk at the Adventurers Worth Protecting event last Saturday at Sierra Nevada. We talked to many locals and tourists about our mission and signed up a lot of new volunteers!
