ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

In 1855, Millersville University was founded. Known then as the Lancaster County Normal School, it opened with James P. Wickersham as principal and a peak of 147 teachers in attendance. The president of the school was Thomas H. Burrowes and vice-president was Lewis M. Hobbs. November 5, 1855, marked the start of the first full session, with a new expansion off the original Academy building (Old Main) that made 96 rooms available for nearly 200 students and their teachers. This picture depicts Old Main in 1854.

Old Main, originally constructed as The Academy Building, served as the administration offices, classrooms, dining hall, library, dormitory and chapel. The original building was built in 1854 with many additions over the years. A chapel and an additional story to the tower was built with a new 1000-pound bell hung in the tower in 1875. Installation of the famous stained glass windows was begun in 1905. In 1965 the college began the razing of Old Main to make way for a new library.

Welcome to the Cy Fritz Foundation

This is the official page of the Cy Fritz Foundation. Founded by former Millersville University (MU) athletes and coaches, the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity and financially benefits the MU cross country and track & field teams. With state support severely being decreased, state universities are faced with funding challenges. The Cy Fritz Foundation, named after the legendary MU XC and T&F coach, helps to ensure that our cross country and track & field athletes have the training and opportunities necessary to maximize their potential. This page is entitled Save MU Sports as it is the mission of the Foundation to keep our cross country and track & field teams well funded, competitive, and SAVED from the chopping block, which unfortunately did not happen with our men’s program. Thanks for your interest in the Cy Fritz Foundation. We will keep you updated on all of the Foundation’s activities as well as what’s current with the MU cross country and track & field programs that we help support.
