-Message to our Community-
As we continue this 12-week program, we invite the Mount Sinai community to step into a story rooted close to home. The narrator and her family were real residents of Mount Sinai, and this journal is inspired by their lives and world. While the diary entries themselves are imagined, they are set within real dates, places, events, and people that shaped our town during the American Revolution.

As we approach the nation’s 250th birthday, these reflections ask us to remember not only independence, but what it cost families here—in sacrifice, endurance, and loss. Through one household’s story, we honor the shared history that helped shape Mount Sinai and the country we live in today. **NOTE although Mount Sinai (the name) was not in use until 1841 we chose not to use the original name of the hamlet , which was Old Mans.

This Memorial Day, we honor the courage and sacrifice of the Revolutionary War patriots from Brookhaven who helped shape our nation’s fight for independence. Their legacy lives on through the stories we preserve and the freedoms we cherish. 🇺🇸

We are entering Memorial Day weekend (a Federal holiday observed on Monday May 25th this year) that celebrates and honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Observed every year on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day in a nod to the tradition of placing flowers or other displays at gravesites.

The origins of Memorial Day date back to the Civil War, which claimed the lives of some 620,000 soldiers. In the aftermath, devastated communities sought to honor their dead. The commemoration caught on across the nation, eventually expanding to honor fallen soldiers from all wars, but it wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday.

Preserving our History - Vote Yes!
The Miller Place–Mount Sinai Historical Society and Museum will be appearing on the next school budget vote as a stand-alone proposition.

For just $8.25 per household annually, this initiative will support:
• Preservation of the 1720 William Miller House
• Creation of the 1820 Daniel Hawkins House Archive & Research Center

This is an investment in protecting our community’s history, education, and shared heritage for future generations.

THIS PROPOSAL DOES NOT EFFECT SCHOOL SERVICES-THIS IS A STAND ALONE PROPOSITION

Your support matters. Vote YES.

Sunday, May 10th, 2026: Mother's Day. Before Mother’s Day became a widely celebrated day of brunch, bouquets, and greeting cards, it was about peace. In the aftermath of the Civil War, two women—Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia and Julia Ward Howe of Boston—imagined a day when mothers would gather not to be honored, but to heal divided communities.

Before Mother’s Day was an established holiday, Ann Reeves Jarvis and Julia Ward Howe urged communities to gather in ...
