On Wednesday, volunteers potted up more than 550 seedlings, which will be cared for in the coming months in preparation for their fall planting at the Bontecou Preserve. But we're not done!

Join the DLC and Wild Woods Restoration Project at the Bontecou Preserve on Saturday, June 13 for another Seedlings for Stewardship event. We're meeting in the parking lot at 10:00 AM - rain or shine. Prepare to have fun planting these tiny and lovable seedlings!

We had a party today for Vinny Gaglioti, the DLC's Property & Grounds Assistant. We will miss our favorite storyteller as he sails off to a well-deserved retirement. Bon voyage, Vinny!

If you think conservation is only about saving land, water, and resources for plants and animals, you couldn't be more wrong. In addition to the economic benefits of private land conservation - which are many - historical locales, farms that provide local food, rural identities, and more are preserved when land is protected. All of which benefit people.

When a tree falls in the woods... sometimes it lands on a trail. If it isn't removed, it can cause all sorts of problems.

People on the trail may try to climb over it, which could lead to injury.

Or they may try to get around the tree. Vegetation is trampled, resulting in damage to potentially sensitive ecosystems. It can also lead to sections of braided trail, which are more susceptible to erosion.

While a tree on a trail may seem like a simple thing, prompt removal can prevent a whole host of problems.

Late spring's a great time to hit the trails at the Bontecou Preserve. But we're also fully aware that it's tick season.

Andrew's been out mowing the trails to keep the grass low. We still recommend wearing long, light-colored pants and tucking them into your socks, and a long-sleeved shirt tucked into your pants. And always remember to do a thorough tick check when you've finished your visit.

There are many misconceptions about land conservation, including the myth that conserved land can't be used for anything productive.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Agriculture, forestry, recreation, and ecotourism are just a few examples of activities taking place on land conserved by the DLC and other land trusts.

Conservation focuses on how land is used, not shutting down all activity that could take place there.

Of course, events like this don't happen without the support of our friends. Thank you to our host, the event co-chairs, our generous underwriters, the caterers, florist, band, volunteers, Barn Dance sponsors, and all who attended for your continued dedication to land preservation in Dutchess County!
