In Panama’s Santa Fe National Park, soils can form high in the canopy. Cary’s Shannon LaDeau was featured in The New York Times. The article highlighted findings from an Ecosphere paper she led showing that blacklegged ticks in the Hudson Valley are increasingly carrying more than one pathogen.

Most commonly found together were Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, and Babesia microti, a parasite that causes a malaria-like illness known as babesiosis.

The results have important public health implications because these pathogens require different treatments. Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics such as doxycycline, while Babesia infections are treated with antiparasitic medications.
