Brothers and Sisters,

Senate Bill 5234 Take Back Your Medication is at a critical point in the session. Some senators are stating "they are not hearing from their community on this".

The Take Back Your Meds Coalition has been working on this for four years with a ton of push back from the Pharmaceutical industry because it would cost them .02 cents per $36.00 prescription.

This bill creates a state wide medicine take bake funded by the drug companies with a 2.5 million dollar cap on their out of pocket expense. The program is expected to be well below that amount. They spent over 450 million in advertising alone. No matter what your read this program is cost neutral to the state.

The Ryan's Solution Foundation as well as The Washington State Council of Fire Fighters and Solid waste divisions throughout the state as well as waste water treatment plants all over Washington support this bill. The list of Supporters is too long to mention but needless to say our brothers and sisters in law enforcement are supporting this bill and need our help. They cannot sustain this program with the continuing cuts in their budgets.

At this time 17 of 39 counties in Washington collect medication. In King County there are 5 sights 3 in our area and none in the densely populated area of King County. Please email or call your representative in the Senate to get them to support this bill. Senators Hill, Fain, Becker, Litsow and Hobbs especially need to hear from us.

Here is the link to the bill: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=5234

Thanks your continued support,
Scott DePuy

Drug Task Force Commander Pat Slack says “… permanent recycling systems exist for … tires, computers and batteries … but not for unwanted meds.” “an unused tire has never killed anybody, but unused meds have.” This and more in the Investigate West story about meds take-back bill (SSB 5234) (http://crosscut.com/2012/01/23/health-medicine/21822/Drug-industry-has-so-far-stalled-safety-and-pollution-measure/ )

Pharmaceutical companies say that a bill from state Sen. Adam Kline to require take-back programs for unused prescription drugs would duplicate federal efforts and do little.

Ryan was a funny, loving young man who wanted so many things but had the large obstacle of drugs in his way. Ryan was a very accomplished soccer player and loved the sport immeasurably. I am a firefighter and Ryan was very sensitive to when I worked and he would be home with his mom to keep her company. Those evenings when I was at work was their time, time to talk time to hang out and watch TV or go shopping or just be together as a mom and her son. Every couple of weeks, or once a month, it seemed like Ryan would find a new word or a new way to use an old word. Like the word filthy in a good way, “That was filthy!” or his last one was “dank”, dank meant cool...“that is so dank”. Ryan’s sense of humor was fun, annoying, and just plain funny. But, it gave me pause to not take life so seriously.
