On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and the words of freedom were carried from person to person, in a moment too long delayed. We can only imagine how that must have felt — who perished during those preceding years and who suffered.

Two and a half long years had passed since the Emancipation Proclamation. For many enslaved people even though freedom had been declared in law, it remained out of reach for their daily lives. The delay was about more than just the great distance of Texas from Washington, D.C. Freedom required enforcement, and in many places those who benefited from slavery resisted, ignored, or delayed its arrival for as long as possible.

At the Greater Milford Area Historical Society, we believe that preserving the past means preserving all of it: the celebrations and the contradictions, the founding ideals and the distance between those ideals and how they were actually lived.

Juneteenth is not a meaningless footnote of history. It is a reminder that freedom is measured not only by what is written into law, but by whether those promises are fulfilled in people's lives.

Today we honor the resilience, strength, and enduring contributions of Black Americans, and we reflect on the ongoing work of telling a fuller, more honest history.

To everyone who celebrates today, we honor this day and the history it represents.

Happy Juneteenth.

If you went to Milford Schools' Miami Elementary, or dropped your kids off there, or just drove past that red brick building on OH-28 for decades — you probably noticed when it came down just a couple weeks ago.

Built in 1929 and added onto four more times over the years, it was one of those buildings that was so woven into the fabric of the neighborhood that most of us stopped really seeing it. The murals, lockers, gym with the eagle painted under the basketball hoop. The marquee sign out front that still read "Where Eagles Soar" right up to the end.

Clermont County, Ohio - Government 's Land Bank funded the demolition in partnership with Miami Township • Clermont County OH and the Ohio Department of Development. The site is cleared now, and whatever comes next gets to start fresh.

Thank you to Mark Birkle of Wrapped in Light Photography who works on many photo projects of historical significance in this area. We appreciate everything he shares with us here at the historical society.

Twenty years of art in Milford, first at Promont House and then moving to Main Street, deserves a little celebrating, and we'd love for your business to be part of it.

Art Affaire - Milford OH returns to downtown Milford on Saturday, September 26, 2026, bringing 7,000–10,000 visitors to three blocks of closed Main Street for a day of juried fine art, live music, a kids zone, and real community. As the primary fundraiser for the Greater Milford Area Historical Society, every sponsorship directly supports Promont and the preservation of Milford's history.

Here's how you can get involved:

Music Stage or Kids Zone Sponsor — $2,000
