Register for the Virtual Support Group hosted by ABC Medical.
Once a month ABC will host a support group that will cover issues relevant to the spinal cord injury and spina bifida community. The group will meet on the last Wednesday of each month. The group will be hosted by prominent individuals from the medical field, athletes and those living with spina bifida and spinal cord injuries. Topics will range from independent living, adaptive sports and insurance coverages.
The discussions are set to run for 40 minutes which includes a question and answer period and will be moderated by ABC Medical.
This month the group will discuss Exercise & Nutrition. The panelists for this month’s theme are:
David Kiley, Paralympic Athlete & Coach
Dave Kiley is the owner of 13 Paralympic medals (nine of them gold) in basketball, skiing and racing. In addition to his unprecedented six MVP awards from National Wheelchair Basketball Tournaments, Kiley was voted the Most Valuable Player of the First 50 Years of the sport by the International Wheelchair Basketball Association. Kiley was also the first player to serve as commissioner, then president, of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. Dave coached the women’s USA Paralympic basketball team to a medal in the 2012 Summer Games in London. Coach Kiley runs sports camps for wheelchair basketball and coaches on daily nutrition and exercise for his Paralympic athletes.
Tim Caldwell, Bodybuilder
Tim is a Research Manager in North Carolina. He is a wheelchair basketball player and coach with 10 years of experience. He has a considerable amount of experience with adaptive sports and adaptive training techniques. He is inspired by teaching and mentoring others and translating his adaptive sports skills and experiences into real life lessons. Tim is an avid bodybuilder and competes currently. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the UNC and a master’s degree from UTA.
Jereme Wilroy, Graduate Assistant, University of Alabama
Jereme is a graduate assistant in the Department of Health Science at the University of Alabama. He is researching and preparing a study on the physical activity of disabled individuals. He recently conducted a survey in which the data will be used to create a website concerning exercise and nutrition for individuals with varying physical disabilities. The website will provide a valuable resource for individuals with physical disabilities who are looking to increase their physical activity.
