📣 Advocacy Update: Important Changes Secured 📣

MassABA is pleased to share meaningful changes resulting from our advocacy and coordinated campaign to address serious concerns related to the recent updates to MassHealth’s Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Medical Necessity Criteria and Performance Specifications that went into effect on January 1, 2026.
As a direct result of continued engagement and advocacy, MassHealth has implemented several important revisions, including:
✔️ Reverting age requirements for Behavior Technicians while further discussions continue

✔️ Increasing the daily limit for group instruction from 2 hours to 4.5 hours

✔️ Revisions to language in the initial assessment requirements

✔️ Updates to the “Intensive” service category, clarifying that most domains (not all) are required

✔️ Clear clarification that low utilization alone does not establish lack of medical necessity
These changes represent a significant step forward in protecting equitable access to medically necessary ABA services and supporting the sustainability and integrity of our field.

🔗 Performance Specifications (updated):https://files.constantcontact.com/9ba41bbb401/07b37623-49a6-4696-af24-21ce48ae040a.pdf

MassABA will continue to advocate, collaborate, and support policies that ensure equitable access to ABA services. While more work remains, these changes are a meaningful step in protecting families, providers, and the field of ABA in Massachusetts.
