Air Force Pararescue and Combat Rescue Officer service members, veterans and their families. We execute our mission guided by three goals:

Relieve the physical and psychological demands of service

Provide tragedy, transition, and education assistance

Honor the commitment and sacrifice of those who live by the motto: "These Things We Do, That Others May Live"

U.S. Air Force Parares

cuemen, also known as “PJs,” and their Combat Rescue Officer leaders are the only US force specifically trained and equipped to execute the most dangerous and technical rescue operations worldwide. Regardless of enemy threat or environmental conditions, these elite warriors stand ready to find isolated and injured people, render expert medical care, and return them safely. Such selfless service takes a toll on military families. These warriors operate at a convergence of roles known to be high-risk for Post-Traumatic Stress: ground combat, trauma medicine, and the recovery of human remains. Also, the physical burden of carrying patients, rescue equipment, and combat loads through parachute insertions, armed conflict, open ocean swims, glacier travel and mountainous terrain routinely results in chronic physical and neurological damage. As part of the U.S. Air Force - Special Warfare team, Pararescuemen are the only Department of Defense elite combat forces specifically organized, trained, equipped, and postured to conduct full spectrum Personnel Recovery to include both conventional and unconventional combat rescue operations. These Battlefield Airmen are the most highly trained and versatile Personnel Recovery specialists in the world. Pararescue is the nation’s force of choice to execute the most perilous, demanding, and extreme rescue missions anytime, anywhere across the globe. The 500+ PJs are assigned to Guardian Angel and Special Tactics Squadrons throughout the Active Duty, Guard, and Reserve Air Force components. They operate most often as independent teams but routinely serve alongside other US and Allied Special Operations Forces.

On 9 June 2010, the crew of Pedro 66 and Pedro 67 responded to a call for help in the southern province of Afghanistan. It would be their 2nd combat rescue of the day. When Pedro 67 landed to pick up a critically injured marine, Pedro 66 came under enemy fire. In the engagement, Pedro 66 tail rotor was taken out and she sprung out of control impacting the ground from 150 feet at 120 knots. 1 Combat Rescue Officer (Capt. Joel Gentz) and 2 Pararescuemen (Tsgt Michael Flores and SrA Benjamin White) died on impact. Flight Engineer SSgt David Smith died moments later; Pilot Capt. David Wisniewski died weeks later from his injuries suffered. Capt. Anthony Simone and MSgt Christopher Aguilera were the only 2 survivors.

The Pararescue Foundation is excited to continue its partnership with PreVeteran to offer Private Sector Readiness (PSR) Training for transitioning PJs and CROs.

This 5-week program is designed to help service members successfully navigate and perform in the private sector environment. Over the past several years, the curriculum has been continuously refined and strengthened based on real-world feedback and lessons learned from previous cohorts.

What makes this program unique is that it goes beyond a single course. After completing the training, participants transition into the PreVeteran Development Community, where they continue receiving mentorship, support, accountability, and professional development over time.

This is end-to-end transition support built specifically for the special operations community.

📅 The next cohort begins July 27, 2026.

Did you know that post-traumatic stress is a normal response to an abnormal event?

Today, we want to shift the conversation beyond PTSD awareness and talk about post-traumatic growth.

Many Pararescuemen experience meaningful growth after trauma — emerging with stronger relationships, a clearer sense of purpose, and a deeper understanding of their own resilience.

Post-traumatic growth can look like:

🤝 Becoming more open to support and connection
💪 Discovering new strengths
🧭 Finding renewed meaning and purpose
🧠 Developing greater emotional awareness
🪂 Strengthening commitment to service and community

None of us seek out trauma, but for many in the PJ community, it becomes part of the story.

Growth does not erase hardship, but it reminds us that healing and transformation are possible.

At the Pararescue Foundation, we are here to support that journey.

Sharing the wonderful feedback from the recent 38th RQS Spouses retreat-

“We wanted to thank the Pararescue Foundation again for funding and supporting our recent spouse resiliency retreat. The weekend had a profound impact on the women who attended, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
This retreat provided far more than a weekend away - it created space for connection, resilience, healing, and renewed strength within a community that often carries significant unseen burdens. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to provide this experience to our spouses and appreciate your investment in the wellbeing of this community.”

Today we remember Retired Chief Master Sgt. Mike McManus, who passed away on this day in 2024. McManus was the very first pararescueman hired at the 106th Rescue Wing. In this 2018 video, McManus talks about the Jolly 85 crash for the 40th Memorial Anniversary at VFW Post 1505, Keeseville, N.Y.

Putting Others First, Always.

At the heart of the Pararescue community is a commitment to serve others before self.

“These things we do, that others may live.”

During Men’s Health Month and PTSD Awareness Month, we want to remind our community that strength also means knowing when to seek support.

The realities of operational stress, trauma, and transition are conversations worth having — even when they’re difficult.

Our mission is not only to raise awareness, but to provide meaningful support through programs, education, and confidential resources for the PJ community and their families.

If you or a loved one needs help connecting with support, please reach out confidentially at [email protected].

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of 1st LT Lucas Adams. Let us come together to honor the memory of this great man and all that he did for his family, community, and country.

From 2006-2012 he served with the 48th RQS at Davis-Monthan in Tucson, Arizona, then transitioned into the Air Force Reserve and continued part-time work as a PJ through 2019 with the 304th Reserve Unit in Portland, Oregon.

During his PJ career, Luke was deployed around the world, completing rescue missions on land and in water, bringing to life the Pararescue Jumper motto, "That others may live."

Lucas will be remembered for his loyalty, courage, sense of humor, zeal for life, adventurous spirit, integrity, military valor, his grounding relationship with God, the care and attention he offered his patients, and most especially for his deep love for and commitment to his family.

We ask you to keep his family in your thoughts today.
