Obituary for Mr. William Michael Newnam
Wm. Michael “Mike” Newnam of Lewes, DE, formerly of Chestertown, MD, died on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at his home. He was 64.
Born on March 16, 1951 in Chestertown, MD, he was the son of the late John “Blimp” and Audrey Parsons Newnam. Mr. Newnam was a graduate of Chestertown High School, class of 1969 and later attended Chesapeake College. He married Dee Mathews in 1972. They resided in Chestertown, where he worked at A&P and Bell Atlantic. He worked for over 25 years with Verizon and also worked for Tidewater Utilities in Dover, DE, for seven years. He later worked as a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty in Rehoboth, DE.
While in Chestertown, he coached youth football and little league baseball, served two terms as Kent County Commissioner, he was appointed as Maryland State Delegate serving for a year. He was a Past President and board member of the Chester River Yacht and Country Club, member of the Chestertown Lions Club, Trustee of Debbie’s Fund for Animals, and was a registered lobbyist for Verizon and Tidewater Utilities. Throughout his life, he enjoyed golfing and Baltimore Sports. With his gregarious personality, he truly never met a stranger.
He was predeceased by Dee Matthews Newnam in 2001.
Mr. Newnam is survived by his daughter, Kristin Harper and husband Justin of Church Hill, MD; brothers, Tom Hill of Charleston, SC, Jack Newnam of Drexel Hill, PA, and Jimmy Newnam of Summerfield, FL; his longtime companion, Karen Barnes; her children, Dustin Ressler and Leah Barnes and her grandchildren, Kylie Ressler and Kaden Ressler. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11:00 am at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road Chestertown, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Debbie’s Fund for Animals, 794 Milford Canterbury Road, Milford, DE 19963 or Kent County Youth Baseball, 11536 Chesterville Road, Kennedyville, MD 21645.
