BREAKING: Safety Service Patrol Worker Killed in I-64 Hit-and-Run in Newport News; Driver Sought

Newport News, Va. — A VDOT Safety Service Patrol worker was killed in a hit-and-run along Interstate 64 early this morning after a separate vehicle struck a trooper’s vehicle, Virginia State Police announced.

According to police, a trooper responded to I-64 westbound at the Jefferson Avenue overpass around 3:12 a.m. after receiving a report of a motorist sleeping inside a vehicle.

A preliminary investigation by Virginia State Police found that a trooper’s vehicle responding to the call was struck from behind by a Kia Sorento driven by 44-year-old Wanagi Gordon of Newport News, who was charged with reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. Officials reported that the trooper was outside the police vehicle at the time and was not injured.

Police said a Safety Service Patrol worker at the scene was then struck by an orange Dodge Charger that continued driving after the collision. Officials confirmed the worker suffered fatal injuries. Their identity has not been released as officials work to notify family members.

Virginia State Police continues to search for the orange Dodge Charger involved in the fatal hit-and-run. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle or its driver is asked to call 804-750-8788.

FL - 3 firefighters suffer minor injuries as their apparatus is struck from behind while working an active crash scene. The driver of the striking vehicle was trauma alerted to the hospital.

At approximately 6:03 a.m. today, Boca Raton Fire Rescue responded to a vehicle crash in the southbound express lanes of I-95. While crews were clearing up the scene, one of our fire trucks was involved in a serious collision.

Three Boca Raton firefighters were inside the fire truck at the time. One was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, while two others were taken for evaluation as a precaution. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident was trauma alerted to a nearby hospital.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Out of respect for everyone involved and the ongoing investigation, additional information will be shared as appropriate.

TX - Fortunately no responders injured when one of the blocking apparatus was struck. Between the 3 crashes, only minor injuries to civilians. The same can not be said for the engine.

LORENA, TX (September 12, 2026) – At approximately 4:25 a.m. this morning, Lorena Fire Department crews were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident on southbound Interstate 35 near mile marker 320. While crews were operating at the scene, a secondary crash occurred north of the original incident.

As firefighters responded to and began working the second crash, Lorena Fire apparatus were positioned to protect responders and motorists by blocking the affected travel lanes, along with an additional lane to provide a safety buffer.

While operating in this configuration, a motorist struck Lorena Fire Department Engine 2, which had been specifically positioned as a blocking apparatus to protect personnel working on the roadway.

Fortunately, no firefighters or other responders were injured. The positioning of the apparatus, along with continued training in roadway and traffic incident safety, provided a critical layer of protection between responders and approaching traffic.

Across the three separate crashes, those involved were either transported with minor injuries or evaluated and declined transportation.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash involving Engine 2.

This incident serves as an important reminder of the dangers first responders face while operating on our roadways. When approaching emergency vehicles, motorists should slow down, move over, remain alert, and give responders the space they need to work safely.

As of this release, all southbound lanes of Interstate 35 have reopened.

NE - Trooper injured when his vehicle is struck while on the shoulder of the interstate. His injuries are minor but the damage to the vehicle is not!
