NE - Trooper injured when his vehicle is struck while on the shoulder of the interstate. His injuries are minor but the damage to the vehicle is not!

NE - A very close call for a Nebraska state trooper! The trooper was providing early warning and protection for a tow operator when their patrol vehicle was struck from behind. Fortunately just minor injuries to the trooper.

MOVE OVER! We are extremely thankful that our Trooper wasn't seriously injured when his cruiser was hit last night on I-80 near North Platte.

He was parked, with emergency lights on, moving traffic over to protect tow truck operators while they cleaned up a previous crash.

Slow Down, Move Over.
It’s the law

Today, we were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Boulder Hill. Thankfully the car took most of the damage. Besides some whiplash and a scrape, there were no injuries that we knew of.

But....

If you see us out on the roadway, wearing our gear with those amazing lights and wee woos on, SLOW DOWN!! We might be smiling but we definitely would rather be at home. But, accidents happen and people need help. That's where we come in. So, if we're smiling and giving you a wave or thumbs up, you're doing great. If we're not smiling, pointing at you, showing you (specifically you) our slow sign and mouthing "slow down", I think we're trying to tell you to... Slow Down!

Montana’s move over law includes highway maintenance workers. These are the folks that repair guard rails, remove debris, minor projects along the highway and other activities. Amber lights still require you to move over and slow down.

MDT crews work to help you arrive at your destination safely. Next time you see flashing lights on the side of the road, slow down and move over if it is safe to do so. It’s more than courtesy, it’s the law.

Fulfilling our mission in education

Jerry Prete
President & CEO, Move Over Montana

Jerry Prete is the President and CEO of Move Over Montana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public on Montana’s Move Over Law. Through high school presentations, billboards, and social media outreach, Move Over Montana raises awareness about roadside safety. The organization is also working to establish a grant program to equip emergency responders with critical safety equipment for roadway operations.

With over 36 years of experience as a firefighter and 26 years as an EMT. Jerry has
served in diverse settings; from rural to suburban and urban communities. He is
currently volunteering with Miles City Fire Rescue and Custer County Fire. His service has been recognized with numerous awards, including Firefighter of the Year, the Valor

Award, three First Responder of the Year awards, two Awards of Excellence, and three Lifesaver Awards. Jerry has been a certified instructor since 2001, having worked with Chippewa Valley Technical College and now with the Montana State University Fire Services Training School, where he serves as the Eastern Regional Training Manager. In this role, he oversees training for 20 counties across the Eastern portion of Montana state. Jerry has been teaching Traffic Incident Management (TIM) since 2007 and currently serves as the State Coordinator for Montana’s TIM training program, a role he has held since 2020. Since 2013, TIM courses have been delivered to over 11,300 emergencyresponders and highway personnel across the state.

Working with various tow companies, we have developed what is considered best
practice for the tow industry while working as a single unit, two rigs or a large scale
recovery event.

Jerry’s commitment to roadway safety is both professional and personal. He has
survived two struck-by incidents, responded to five fatal responder incidents, and lost his uncle, an Illinois State Trooper, who was killed in the line of duty in January 2019 while working a crash scene.
