Sunrise County Arts Institute

Sunrise County Arts Institute Sunrise County Arts Institute, Inc. Sunrise County Arts Institute is a family-run enterprise based in Milbridge, ME, on the spectacular Downeast coast.

(SCAI), est. 2014 in Milbridge, ME, brings quality music & arts education, concerts & community experiences to the DownEast-Acadia region, and online to the wider world! SCAI, founded in 2014, is a Maine public benefit C-corporation.

2021 update: Operating online since the 2020 pandemic began, SCAI launched a new initiative, "Sing into Joy: Singing as Your Path to Wellness" (see its FB page an

d https://singintojoy.org) and continues to provide:

- high-quality vocal and other music lessons;
- online groups and learning experiences for people of all ages, with a special emphasis on helping the young develop their talents;
- Creative Retreats for working artists of all kinds to concentrate on their new work, at our scenic facility on a tranquil tidal cove. SCAI intends to resume its traditional live community events when "the coast is clear," including:
- engaging with the community to create a variety of local and regional music and arts events;
- "importing" other noted artists and teachers for enrichment;
- hosting residencies (a week to a month) for visiting writers, composers, songwriters, photographers and other visual artists, who will develop and share their work with the community. We're fortunate to have a beautiful facility where many of these events take place, located on several peaceful acres of woods and waterfront, just 3 minutes from the center of Milbridge, a hub town halfway between the cities of Ellsworth and Machias. We also bring larger-scale concerts and theater events to outside venues: community centers, churches and schools in Milbridge, Cherryfield, Harrington, Columbia, and other nearby towns.

SCAI Prez Danielle Woerner writes:

I was happy to share an invitation to listeners to give a Voice Lesson Gift Certificate on MPBN Radio's annual holiday Made in Maine show, hosted by Jennifer Rooks--and honored and surprised that when they sent the invitation for people to listen to the rebroadcast or go online, they listed me on the site as one of the VIP Callers.

It's humbling, because were so many wonderful artists, crafters, creators of all kinds calling in or emailing the show with their work. Check it out! There will be a link soon to an additional webpage where you can browse.

For those who don’t live near Winter Harbor, it will be streamed on the WHMF’s YouTube channel and available to watch later. Here is the announcement on their website with more detail:

Bringing together musicians of different ages and stages, with world class artists, in performance, amidst the beauty of Downeast Coastal Maine.

SCAI prez Danielle Woerner shares:

I’m excited to be reading in Eastport this Thursday! A lovely way to celebrate my mother’s birthday, too. Here is the announcement as it ran in The Quoddy Tides:

(Headline) Area writers to read at ArtWalk event June 22

On Thursday, June 22nd at 6 pm, local writer Catherine J.S. Lee will host Writers Read, an evening at Eastport’s Phoenix Fine Wines with six Washington County authors reading selections from their published works. Chuck Kniffen, Danielle, Woerner, Fran Drabick, J.D. Rule, Jnana Hodson and Sherry Christie will share works ranging from haiku to memoir to historical fiction. All authors will have books available for sale and signing.

This reading is a joint presentation by Eastport ArtWalk and the Eastport Arts Center (EAC). Last fall, a literary arts committee formed at the EAC with an eye to increased local offerings in the literary arts and more exposure for regional and Maine-wide authors. Workshops and author readings have been held with more to come.
