Birthplace of American Legion Baseball

The City of Milbank has pledged 1 million dollars to jumpstart the building of a new, state of the a Today, the program has teams in all 50 states plus Canada.

The American Legion Baseball league was first proposed at an American Legion state convention in Milbank, South Dakota, in 1925. More than 95 years later, American Legion Baseball continues to be one of the most successful and tradition-rich amateur athletic leagues. Since its inception in 1925, countless Legion Baseball players have gone on to play college and professional baseball, with 68 induc

ted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. More than half of current major-league players played Legion Baseball and so did almost every working MLB manager, along with several former commissioners. In Milbank, the birthplace of American Legion Baseball, the school district owned the original property the Legion ball field was on. In 2018, they decided to expand their school campus, and as a result, the baseball facility was torn down. The City of Milbank has pledged 1 million dollars to jumpstart the building of a new, state of the art baseball facility. They are working together with the community of Milbank and American Legion Post 9 to fund the remaining amount. This project will not only build a new baseball complex, it will build upon the legacy of Milbank and Legion Baseball to create a memorial that pays respect to the thousands of young men who have participated in the program since 1925.

If you've been to the field, you may have seen the bench, but did you know...
Who is Lee Bear?
Lee Bear portrayed the character of George Steinbrenner in the Seinfeld episode "The Invitations." Bear's portrayal was from the back, with only the back of his head visible, and he was voiced by Larry David. Bear's performance was a comedic take on the real-life Yankees owner, who had a tumultuous relationship with the team and its fans.
So... now you know.

From Milbank, the birthplace of American Legion baseball, to Castlewood, where we'll meet a groundskeeper who juggles a lot more than keeping his field ready to go. We'll also meet a pair of softball sisters who play for different teams, and we'll take a trip to Beresford to learn the meaning behind Jack Lawrence Field.

Wow, what an amazing season of baseball it was! We were able to host several tournaments and show off our awesome new field. We had so many positive comments on how beautiful it was! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for it! We had teams at every level attend the state tournament from amateurs all the way down to 10U and 18 rec teams ⚾️

Come out for some more great baseball! We are hosting the Jr American Legion State Tournament. Opening ceremonies will be after game 3. Milbank will face Belle Fourche following opening ceremonies. Come out and show your support!
