In July of 2008, the Natural Land Institute (NLI) with assistance from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and Grand Victoria Foundation and guidance from US Fish & Wildlife Service and Illinois Department of Natural Resources, purchased 92 acres of land in Milan Bottoms which has access from Illinois Highway 92 to the backwaters of th
e Mississippi River (public land). With guidance from NLI Stewardship Staff, much of the maintenance work is done by volunteers. Recent volunteers have included NLI members, duck hunters that utilize the property for access to duck blinds on public land, and representatives of various conservation partners. Those interested in volunteering should contact NLI directly. NLI’s mission is to create an enduring legacy of natural land in northern Illinois for people, plants, and animals. The Milan Bottoms property is a piece of a larger backwater ecosystem on the Mississippi River (approximately 3,500 acres). Landowners that want to make permanent their own legacy of natural land can contact NLI to discuss various options. Examples include conservation easements, land donations, fee title sales, and estate planning options. to NLI help make these conservation projects possible. Any grant available for permanent conservation requires matching funds and long term maintenance plans. The purchase of this property was pieced together from 5 sources including cash from NLI. As a conservation land trust NLI always works with partners and the community on conservation projects. The final product of conservation may be owned by NLI, the Department of Natural Resources, a forest preserve district, another conservation land trust, or, in the case of conservation easements, the original owner. Read through the NLI website, naturalland.org, for more details.
