On June 13, the Penn State Master Gardeners of the Juniata Valley will be doing “make and take” Tussie Mussies and teaching visitors about the meaning of various flowers.
In the 18th century, the tussie mussie transitioned from being a medieval tool for warding off foul odors into a highly fashionable, romantic accessory for the upper classes.
While these small, fragrant bouquets of flowers and herbs reached the absolute peak of their fame during the Victorian Era, the 1700s were the bridge where they became deeply tied to fashion, flirtation, and the introduction of a secret language.
