Someone has to go first.
Someone has to step onto the battlefield.
Someone has to break the pattern.
Someone has to challenge what everyone else has accepted.
Someone has to believe God for what nobody has seen before.
Someone has to break things open.
Someone has to plow through.
Someone has to rush the battlefield.
Someone has to go first.
David understood this.
For forty days, Goliath stood before the armies of Israel.
For forty days, an entire army heard the same voice.
A voice of intimidation.
A voice of fear.
A voice telling them they could not win.
And for forty days, nobody moved.
Until David showed up.
David wasn't the biggest man in the army.
He wasn't the most experienced warrior.
He didn't even look like the person you would expect God to use to confront a giant.
But David knew who his God was.
Everyone else saw the size of Goliath.
David saw the greatness of God.
Everyone else saw an impossible situation.
David saw an opportunity for God to reveal His power.
David didn't deny that Goliath was a giant.
He simply refused to make the giant bigger than his God.
And David stepped forward.
Think about Israel's history.
When the twelve spies went into Canaan, ten came back saying the inhabitants were too strong.
They said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” Numbers 13:31
They saw giants and saw themselves as grasshoppers.
Fear had already decided what was possible.
But years later, David stood in front of another giant and decided something different.
He didn't say, “This giant is too big.”
He said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
1 Samuel 17:37
David understood that when you align yourself with the Almighty, impossible becomes possible.
David ran toward him.
That's what gets me about David.
He didn't slowly inch his way toward Goliath.
He didn't stand at a distance and negotiate with fear.
The Bible says, “David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:48
He ran toward the battle.
Friends, someone has to go first.
Someone has to run toward what everybody else is running from.
Someone has to believe God before there is evidence.
Someone has to step into the territory nobody else is willing to enter.
Someone has to confront the thing that has intimidated everybody else.
Someone has to break the agreement with fear.
When David's stone struck Goliath and the giant fell, something more than a giant fell that day.
Fear fell.
The intimidation fell.
The mentality that said, “We can't,” fell.
And suddenly, the army that had been standing at a distance began to move.
Because somebody went first.
David broke open the way.
David showed them what was possible.
He showed an entire army that the thing they had been afraid of could actually fall.
He didn't just defeat a giant.
He gave other people courage to fight.
And I believe there are moments when God calls somebody to go first because there are people behind them who need to see what obedience looks like.
Someone has to go first.
Someone has to step out of the boat.
Someone has to pick up the stone.
Someone has to rush the battlefield.
Maybe you're the first one in your family to break the cycle.
Maybe you're the first one to pursue God with everything in you.
Maybe you're the first one to answer the call.
Maybe you're the first one to believe for something that nobody around you has ever seen.
Maybe you're the first one to say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Don't despise being first.
Being first can be lonely.
Being first can mean nobody understands what you're doing.
Being first can mean people question you.
Being first can mean you don't have a blueprint.
But sometimes there is no blueprint because God is calling you to become the blueprint for somebody else.
David didn't have an Israelite warrior he could point to and say, “That's how you kill a giant.”
So David became the example.
He became the evidence.
He became the testimony.
He showed an entire generation, giants do fall.
David didn't know what would happen when he stepped onto that battlefield.
He only knew that he could no longer stand on the sidelines listening to a giant defy the God he served.
And maybe that's where some of us are today.
You've been waiting for someone else to move.
But what if God is looking at you?
What if your obedience becomes the doorway someone else walks through?
David stepped onto that battlefield as one young man, but when Goliath fell, an entire army found its courage.
Never underestimate what God can do through one person who is willing to believe Him.
You may feel like you're standing alone, but you are not standing there for nothing.
Your family is watching.
Your children are watching.
Your church is watching.
A generation is watching.
And sometimes God will allow you to face what others have feared because He intends to reveal through your life what they thought was impossible.
So don't wait until you feel fearless.
David didn't have the absence of fear; he had the presence of faith.
Don't wait until everything makes sense.
Don't wait until you have every answer.
Don't wait for someone else to prove it can be done.
Maybe like David, your obedience is about to change a story too.
Maybe your yes is about to become the beginning of something much bigger than you.
So if God is calling you into unfamiliar territory, go.
If He's asking you to believe again, believe.
If He's asking you to step forward, step.
Because you may be standing at the very place where God wants to use your life to prove that what looked impossible was never impossible for Him.
The giant may be in front of you, but God is with you.
