This month, we’re celebrating peas and the Mississippi farmers who grow them. Meet Jan'Nise Thomas, a young farmer in the Mississippi Delta carrying on a family farming tradition.
“Purple hull peas are especially meaningful because they feel like home. They’re a true Southern staple and remind me of family, good food, and the traditions I grew up with.”
For Jan’Nise, farming is about more than growing food.
“It’s about carrying forward something my dad and grandfather built together long before I was here. I’m proud to be a young farmer continuing that tradition, and I want other young people to see that agriculture is still alive and well here in the Mississippi Delta.”
Jan'Nise sees farming as an opportunity to help students make a real connection to their food.
“If a student can see our farm and realize that food is being grown right here in Mississippi by families like mine, that means a lot to me.”
This August, we’re celebrating peas and the farmers like Jan’Nise Thomas, and helping students see that agriculture is STRONG right here in Mississippi.
