Mentors Care

Mentors Care Connecting high school students with adult volunteers to mentor students toward graduation and purposeful lives

We have a population of students in our high schools that are on track of not graduating. The reasons are varied; homeless, impoverished, poor support system, failed classes in previous years, poor attendance, incarcerated parents, single parent homes, peer pressure and bad decisions. Sometimes a student can get off track even if they have loving adults in their life. Mentors Care will partner wit

h those and support them with a loving adult matched with their child. If a student does not have positive adult role models in their life, the student is in real risk of not graduating and having a future. Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and their future. Ultimately, mentoring connects a young person to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity. Yet one in three young people will grow up without this critical asset. Young Adults Who Were Falling Off Track But Had a Mentor Are:

55% more likely to enroll in college
78% more likely to volunteer regularly
90% are interested in becoming a mentor
130% more likely to hold leadership positions. o In addition to better school attendance and a better chance of going on to higher education, mentored youth maintain better attitudes toward school. (The Role of Risk, 2013)

o Students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class. (Public/Private Ventures study of Big Brothers Big Sisters)

We're a little late sharing this one but it's too good not to celebrate! 💚💜

This past school year marked our first year serving students at Godley High School and we couldn't be more grateful for the way the Godley community welcomed Mentors Care with open arms! From school leadership to community partners, mentors, and supporters, so many people came alongside us to help launch this program and make a difference in the lives of students. We're thankful for every person who believed in this mission and helped make year one a success.

Thank you, Godley ISD, for your partnership and commitment to supporting students. We can't wait to continue building on this foundation when students return this fall!

Mentors Care is making a difference for Godley students through mentorship, encouragement and consistent support. 💜

During Monday night’s school board meeting, Mentors Care shared updates on student progress, mentor engagement and the impact the program is having at Godley High School. Trustees also heard a powerful testimony from a GHS student about how the program has helped change the direction of his life.

Mentors Care currently serves students struggling with grades, attendance and behavior while connecting families with additional resources and support.

We’re honored to highlight our next Carl Smith Award nominee, Kaitlyn Hejl, nominated by our Milford High School Campus Coordinator, Carol Noel. 🏆

Kaitlyn leads with a quiet strength that has made a life changing impact on her student over the last two years. Through every high and low, she has remained a steady, loving, and encouraging presence, while walking alongside her student through grief, overwhelming challenges, difficult decisions and moments where giving up felt easier than moving forward!

No matter the circumstance, Kaitlyn consistently reminded her student of her worth, her potential and the bright future still ahead of her. She celebrated every victory right alongside her, from major milestones like Homecoming Court to the everyday wins that helped build confidence and resilience along the way!

Even with a busy life of her own, Kaitlyn continues to show up each week with intentionality and care, making sure her student always feels valued, supported and deeply loved. And now, watching her mentee grow into a more confident, responsible and compassionate young woman is a reflection of the incredible example Kaitlyn has set through her mentorship 🥹

Her impact reaches far beyond weekly meetings and we are so thankful for the love, dedication and hope she continues to pour into her student and Mentors Care. Congratulations on your nominee, Kaitlyn! 💚

We’re honored to highlight our next Carl Smith Award nominee, Sean Horton, nominated by our Italy High School Campus Coordinator, Carol Noel! 💚

For the past four years, Sean has consistently shown up with patience, creativity and an incredible ability to connect with students! He creates a space where his mentees feel accepted exactly as they are, free to let their guard down, explore new things, and simply enjoy being themselves without fear of judgment.

Sean has a unique way of building confidence through intentional connection and meaningful experiences. Whether it’s turning cafeteria tables into ping pong courts, bringing in gaming systems and Legos or building full pickleball courts from scratch, every activity is designed with purpose: helping his student feel valued, capable and seen.

What stands out most is Sean’s ability to meet students where they are while gently encouraging them beyond what they thought they were capable of. Through compassion, humor, vulnerability and consistency, he has created a mentoring relationship that his student now looks forward to every single week!

Beyond his mentee, Sean continually goes above and beyond for Mentors Care as a whole, always asking how he can help, stepping in quickly when needs arise and serving with a genuine and selfless heart! His impact on students, this program and our mission is truly unforgettable. Congratulations on your nomination, Sean! 🏆

Since the very beginning of the Mentors Care program in Grandview, Corey has faithfully shown up as a steady and encouraging presence for his mentee. Through consistency, compassion and intentional listening, he has created a relationship built on trust, safety, and genuine care!

Corey has become a source of strength and stability for his student during seasons filled with uncertainty. By simply showing up, listening without judgment, and believing in what is possible, he has helped his mentee feel not only supported, but truly at home! 🏡

Rather than pushing his own agenda, Corey leads with encouragement and understanding, creating space for his student to dream bigger, hope again and believe a different future is possible. Through his actions, he consistently reminds his mentee that he is valued beyond measure!

Corey’s impact extends beyond his mentoring meetings as he continues to advocate for Mentors Care within the community, sharing firsthand the powerful impact mentoring relationships can have on both students and mentors alike. Congratulations on your nomination, Corey! 💚

We’re honored to highlight our next Carl Smith Award nominee, Dana Ciardo, nominated by our Campus Coordinator, Kelsie Irion! 💚

For nearly two years, Dana has shown up wholeheartedly for her student through every high and low life has brought. No matter what she may personally be carrying, she continues to show up with compassion, encouragement, and a calm place for her student to land.

Through difficult seasons and heartbreaking circumstances, Dana has remained a steady and trusted presence, never walking away when things became hard, but instead continuing to remind her student that setbacks do not define her future! She encourages growth, accountability and resilience while loving her student exactly where she is.

Because their meetings happen during lunch, Dana always arrives with food or drinks in hand and thoughtful activities they can enjoy together, turning Wednesdays into what her student now excitedly calls “Dana Day!” From puzzles to meaningful conversations, Dana has created moments her student looks forward to every single week.

Her consistency, compassion and unwavering support have made a lasting impact not only on her student’s school experience, but on her confidence, well being, and future. Congratulations on your nomination, Dana! 🏆
