Midland Conservation District Mission Statement: "To provide leadership in responsible resource conservation practices to the community for present and future generations."

The Midland Conservation District is one of 75 Conservation District in Michigan. Michigan Conservation Districts are “unique” local units of State Government, established to carry out conservation programs. Conservation Districts utilize state, federal, and private sector resources to assist people with the wise use and protection of the natural resources on their lands. Conservation Districts co

ntinually scan the needs of their local communities, work in partnership with others involved in conservation to set local priorities, and develop action plans to solve natural resource problems. The delivery of these efforts by Conservation Districts allows citizens to manage their private lands for a cleaner, healthier Michigan. The Midland Conservation District is governed by a locally elected, five-member Board of Directors. The Directors make decisions regarding the District’s programs and activities, and hire qualified staff. The staff provide information, technical assistance, workshops, public education, and cost-share opportunities, as well as affordable trees/shrubs to enhance wildlife and reforestation. Today I was out checking our HAP-hunting access program properties, September comes soon, and a stop at Gordonville Gardner for some fresh veggies!
My favorite time of year. I see a chopped veggie salad in my future.

Be aware!

Earlier this summer, Michigan added six plants to the state’s invasive species list, including two aquatic plants commonly used in water gardens: water hyacinth and water lettuce.

As of June 19, 2026, water hyacinth and water lettuce are prohibited from sale in Michigan. That means they may not be purchased online or from out-of-state retailers, and they should not be shared or traded with others.

For homeowners, this does not mean immediate action is required if these plants are already present on your property. The key reminder is to manage them carefully and dispose of them properly so they do not spread. Water garden plants and aquarium plants should never be released into lakes, rivers, storm drains, retention ponds, or other natural waterways.

These two species have been on Michigan’s invasive species watch list for years because they can reproduce quickly, crowd out native aquatic plants, interfere with water flow, and degrade fish and wildlife habitat. Preventing their sale and spread is one more tool for protecting Michigan’s lakes and streams.

The flowers are blooming and we are slowly getting things cleaned up from the work done last fall.The heat and smoke has put a damper on our activities at the Big red barn, SO we are taking advantage of office time and rebuilding and regrouping.
And something really exciting coming soon!

Funding is really tight for us right now.
We are still in a deep hole from the work done to the barns foundation.
It had to be done, so I'm not complaining, just apologizing.
Our fundraising plant sales have helped and we appreciate your support. All the shares and likes of our posts help too!!
I have met some really COOL environment loving people and excited about new partners!
We are planning more plant sales for September! (Too hot now😊)
We are working on having a good supply of trees, shrubs and native plants for lake and river front landowners to help restore and improve your shoreland. And workshops with information coming soon.
We are also doing free site vists.
We will come out, look at your issues. Listen to your concerns, write you a plan, give you direction. This Backyard Conservation Program is free for all landowners!

We are also doing a Backyard Conservation presentation at all 5 Midland County Senior Service Centers in August. Check out their schedules for times and dates. I am really excited for this partnership.
