For Greg “Buddy” and Rebecca Yancer, supporting the Midland Area Community Foundation’s Wave Maker’s Society is deeply personal. Their giving is not rooted in a desire for recognition. It is rooted in lived experience, second chances, and a shared belief that when a community helps carry you through difficult seasons, you look for ways to help carry others.

Greg and Rebecca’s philanthropy journey began long before they considered themselves philanthropists.

Rebecca grew up in Breckenridge, spent 16 years working at Big Boy in Midland, and now resides in Sanford. For her, Midland County has long felt like home. But her understanding of community support changed profoundly after the devastating 2020 flooding damaged her home.

Rebecca was one of the residents who received support to rebuild. At the time, she did not know much about the many partners involved in long-term recovery efforts. She simply knew that people showed up when she needed help most.

“I was given so much,” Rebecca said. “It was always a goal of mine to figure out a way to give back because I was given so much.”

That experience stayed with her. It shaped the way she saw generosity, not as something reserved for the wealthy, but as a response to gratitude. After her own life had been impacted by the kindness of others, giving back became a promise she carried with her.

Greg’s path to giving was different, but it was guided by the same sense of gratitude.

After struggling with substance use, Greg found himself at a breaking point. A single father of five, he entered the court system and was given the opportunity to participate in a recovery court program. While in jail, community members brought a recovery meeting inside. That moment changed the direction of his life.

For the first time, Greg heard a message of recovery. For the first time, he felt hope.

Through recovery court, coaching, accountability, and the support of people throughout Midland County, Greg began to rebuild his life. He eventually became a recovery coach and started helping others who were walking through similar challenges. What began as a desire to give back slowly grew into something much larger.

Greg had worked in construction for much of his life, but after entering recovery, he saw the trades differently. He watched men try to rebuild their lives while returning to work environments that often did not allow time for recovery, counseling, parenting, or personal growth. He started taking a few men with him on weekend jobs and noticed something powerful happening on the roof.

They were not just working. They were supporting each other.

That experience helped inspire what became Community Construct, an organization that provides employment, support, and encouragement for people in recovery and people working to overcome barriers from their past. Since its beginning in 2019, the organization has employed more than 100 people and created a workplace where personal development is part of the job.

The work has grown through community connections, nonprofit partnerships, and the generosity of people who believe in second chances. Whether it is cold-weather gear, a breakfast bar for workers, or someone simply sending a check to help, Greg and Rebecca have seen how small acts of generosity can ripple outward.

Greg says Midland County has continually shown up for him.

“I bet you there hasn’t been a month that has gone by in 12 years that somebody hasn’t given me something in this community,” he said.

That is why being Wave Makers resonates with them.

The Wave Maker’s Society initiative supports unrestricted community investment through the Midland Area Community Foundation. Those flexible dollars allow the Foundation to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, whether that means helping after a disaster, supporting human service organizations, investing in long-term solutions, or addressing emerging needs.

For Greg and Rebecca, that flexibility matters. Their own lives have been shaped by a wide range of support: flood recovery, recovery court, housing challenges, employment opportunities, nonprofit partnerships, and the everyday kindness of neighbors. They know firsthand that community needs are not always simple, predictable, or easy to categorize.

“I think we both were given second chances,” Rebecca said. “So we don’t really have one thing that we want to give to. Let’s just give back to everything. So wherever that reaches, it reaches.”

Greg feels the same way. He believes in the Community Foundation because he has seen its impact across many parts of Midland County. Joining the Wave Maker’s Society allows him and Rebecca to give without needing to decide which single issue matters most. They trust the Foundation to steward those dollars and put them where they can do the most good.

For them, the appeal is simple: flexible giving creates flexible help. And flexible help is what allows a community to respond when people are rebuilding or simply trying to find the next step forward.

Greg and Rebecca’s story is a reminder that philanthropy is not only about the size of a gift. It is about the heart behind it. It is about gratitude becoming action. It is about people who have received support choosing to become part of another person's support system.

Through the Midland Area Community Foundation’s Wave Maker’s Society, they are helping create ripples of generosity that can reach across Midland County today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.

Last night, we gathered for the Midland Area Community Foundation Scholarship Celebration to honor local learners, generous fundholders, dedicated reviewers, and the powerful impact of community philanthropy.

In 2026, your Community Foundation awarded more than 350 scholarships from over 240 scholarship funds to 231 students, totaling $981,900 in impact.

These scholarships represent far more than financial support. They are investments in futures, dreams, careers, and the continued strength of our community. By supporting postsecondary education, we are helping local learners take their next step, whether that path leads to a university, a community college, a skilled trade, a certification program, or another opportunity that helps them grow.

This impact is made possible by the power of endowment. Because scholarship funds are built to grow over time, the generosity of fundholders continues to create opportunities year after year, opening doors for students today while building lasting support for future generations.

The Scholarship Celebration was a meaningful opportunity for recipients to connect with the scholarship fundholders, representatives, and reviewers who helped make these awards possible. Those connections remind us that behind every scholarship is a story of generosity, belief, and commitment to local learners.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening special. Thank you to our scholarship reviewers for the time, care, and thoughtfulness you bring to this process. And thank you to our scholarship fundholders for making these life-changing opportunities possible.

Congratulations to all of our 2026 scholarship recipients. We are proud to support you as you take your next step.

When Jeff and Kay Wagner moved to Midland from Toledo nearly 30 years ago, they were looking for a new opportunity. Jeff’s career in healthcare administration brought their young family north, and Kay, a nurse by background, remembers how difficult it was to leave behind family, familiarity, and a support system while raising three young daughters.

But what began as a career move quickly became something much deeper.

“It was the best decision, I think, we ever made,” Kay said. “We raised the three girls here, and one of our daughters is still here locally with her two children and is very active in the community. It’s been a great, great community to us.”

For the Wagners, supporting the Midland Area Community Foundation grew naturally from that sense of gratitude. They had always believed in giving back to the places they called home. Jeff described it simply as “just part of what we do.” They gave to churches, community projects, the United Way, and other efforts that strengthened the place around them. But their connection to the Community Foundation deepened when Kay began volunteering on the grants committee.

“I think it was really my grant involvement and Jeff’s scholarship review work that we began to learn more about what this foundation stood for and the many possibilities it provides,” Kay said. Over time, Kay’s service grew from grants committee volunteer to trustee and board chair. Through that involvement, the Wagners saw the Foundation not only as a place to give, but as a trusted vehicle for long-term community impact.

Kay called the Foundation “rock solid” and said it created a meaningful structure for their family’s philanthropy. It gave Jeff and Kay a way to talk with their children about giving, generosity, and responsibility.

“This gave us a structure to have a conversation with the kids,” Kay said. “The younger generation is philanthropic in their own way. The MACF provides the conduit to connect generational philanthropic philosophies to ensure sustainable giving now and into the future.

That structure matters to the Wagners because they see philanthropy as both personal and practical. It is about caring for the community today while building something lasting for tomorrow. They appreciate that the Community Foundation allows people to give in many different ways, whether someone contributes $5 or $5,000.

Kay said the Foundation’s diversity of giving opportunities is one of its greatest strengths. “It speaks to the person that only wants to give $5 to someone that wants to give $5,000,” she said. “It doesn’t matter, because there are so many different options and opportunities.”

Jeff has also seen how the Foundation’s reach can extend beyond traditional expectations. Through his mission work in Guatemala with HELPS International, he learned that local donors could contribute through the Community Foundation to support global work tied to Midland volunteers and Midland churches.

“Although it’s Community Foundation, the community is the folks who come together for a cause,” Jeff said. “Through the Community Foundation, we’re able to then dictate and transfer it. That’s very impressive to me, that this community foundation will do that.”

For Jeff and Kay, Midland’s size is part of its strength. It is small enough to feel connected, yet large enough to offer meaningful opportunities. Jeff loves the rail trail, the Community Center, the arts, and the easy access to water and recreation. Kay is drawn to the way people in Midland help others move ideas forward.

“To me, it’s the opportunities,” Kay said. “If you want it, you can access it, and there’s going to be somebody who will mentor you or work with you to try to make your dream come true.”

At the same time, both Jeff and Kay are clear-eyed about Midland’s challenges. They know there are families facing poverty, children struggling with housing and food insecurity, barriers to transportation, child care, internet access, and opportunity. Jeff especially thinks about children born into difficult circumstances.

“They can’t help the situation they’re in,” he said. “Their abilities to learn, get food, and maintain shelter may be very difficult.”

That balance of pride and responsibility is what continues to inspire the Wagners. They believe Midland has extraordinary assets, but they also believe those assets must be used to lift everyone. Their passion lies in affording others the same opportunities they have had by helping families struggling to make ends meet, ensuring all have access to education, and in keeping our children safe and healthy. Looking ahead, Kay dreams of a more vibrant downtown and riverfront, with more restaurants, gathering spaces, and activities for all to enjoy. Jeff hopes the community continues to support families and children who need help most.

The Wagners may have arrived in Midland as newcomers, but they are planted here now. Their daughters still call Midland home, even though they live in other cities. Their grandchildren are growing up here. Their giving is rooted in gratitude for what Midland has given them and hope for what Midland can become.

As Kay put it, “The community was so good to us. How do you pay it forward? How do you make that community the same if not better for future generations, so it’s there for them too?”
