The historic State Theatre in Bay City
Built: 1908
Major Redesign: 1930
Restored: 2000-2008
Architect (1930): C. Howard Crane

Originally built as a vaudeville/burlesque house called the Bijou, Bay City's historic State Theatre has undergone numerous changes over the years. The most significant of which was the 1930 redesign which completely remodeled the building with art deco and mayan revival motifs and renamed it to the Bay Theatre. Much of the theaters character was removed or painted over in the 1960's and stayed that way until it was saved from demolition in 2000 by the Friends of the State Theater, where it began a years long remodeling effort. The interior was brought back to it's original 1930 redesign by John Canning & Co of Connecticut and a loose recreation of the original 1930's marque was designed and installed by Eric E. Larsen of Auburn in 2008.

Alden Dow's Fleming Building at UofM to come down in 2022.

No, it wasn’t designed as a fortress against student radicals. But it could have been, based on architect Alden Dow's 'Michigan Modern' aesthetic. The administration's homely headquarters has gained few admirers since opening in 1968; now it's staring down the wrecking ball.

ARE Update:

The online proctoring option for the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) is expected to launch on December 14, 2020, (https://www.ncarb.org/press/online-proctoring-launch-date-moved-to-december-14) along with several important changes to exam navigation, timing, and tools that will impact all candidates—whether testing in-person or remotely.

https://www.ncarb.org/press/are-update-ncarb-announces-changes-to-exam-navigation-and-timing

Updated We**am and Cable Requirements:

NCARB has updated the we**am and cable/cord requirements for taking an online proctored exam. Candidates testing via online proctoring are now required to have an external we**am to facilitate a “cable-by-cable” assessment of their computer setup at part of their check in. You can find the new we**am specifications, as well as other requirements for online testing, in the updated ARE 5.0 Guidelines.

https://www.ncarb.org/sites/default/files/ARE5Guidelines_OnlineProctoring.pdf

NCARB understands that requiring an external we**am may create an additional expense for candidates. To help offset this, NCARB will provide all candidates who schedule their first online appointment a one-time $50 e-gift card.

Learn more about the exam changes expected to go into effect on November 16, 2020.

07/30/2020

The Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL) within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) is moving to a new online licensing and regulatory database for health and occupational professions, called Michigan Professional Licensing User System (MiPLUS).

Our tentative launch date for this Phase 3a of the new system is August 25, 2020. This phase involves the 13 professions including: Acupuncture, Architects, Audiology, Athletic Trainers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Massage Therapists, Nursing Home Administrators, Professional Engineers Professional Surveyors, Psychology, Real Estate, Sanitarians and Speech Language Pathology.

In order to allow time for migration of current licensing records into the new system, our office will be unable to process license applications, license renewals, or changes to licenses between August 3, 2020 and August 25, 2020, for these professions only. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

This Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document provides answers to questions regarding the conversion to the new system. If you have additional questions or concerns regarding the transition, please do not hesitate to contact us at 517-241-0199 or email [email protected].

One critical item to note is please do not attempt to create or register for a MiPLUS account until after August 25, 2020. Doing so will negatively impact your ability to interact with the system as it will require that you contact our office to correct your account.
As we get closer to the launch date, we will be posting additional information specific to your profession on our MiPLUS website (www.michigan.gov/miplus). In the mean time if you wish to familiarize yourself with the new system you can review the information and videos available here.

Again, thank you for your cooperation as we work together to make Michigan’s system of professional licensing a model for other states.

Sincerely,

Licensing Division

Learning in Lockdown - a CEU Opportunity:

In an effort to help our membership earn their State and AIA required CEUs, we'll be launching a noon virtual series starting in July through the end of the year. These 1-hour presentations will occur every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. You will need to provide your own lunch, but we will provide all the content. We have also invited our friends at AIA Flint to join us!

We feel that this series will be an excellent way to keep events coming to our members as well as to ensure more options for CEUs as we all feel the pain of cancelled conferences, classes, and opportunities. We look forward to virtually seeing and/or hearing you all there. And as always, if you have any questions or concerns, you can reach out to the AIA Saginaw Valley Board at any time!
