From the September 12th medical team: Sarah
For most of the morning, the concerns I was seeing were pretty similar to past clinic days…. until a young woman walked in who was obviously in severe pain. She had horrible wounds located to her right upper back and right hand. I asked her a few questions to get the history…. Approximately 10 years ago, she had sustained a significant head trauma that now resulted in daily seizures and the wounds she presented with occurred due to a fall during one of her seizures about 2 weeks ago. One glance and I could tell a great deal of wound care was needed as they had been healing improperly. I took her outside, gathered as many different supplies as I could think of and began debriding these wounds as she screamed and threw herself from the chair in pain. Part of me felt guilty for putting this young woman through such horrific pain and part of was able to ignore her screams as I did what was going to be best for her healing in the long run.

As I reflect on that hour of pain, physically and emotionally, I am reminded, as it says in Psalm 147:3, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” While the goal of healthcare providers is to heal, we know that any healing we can provide is only temporary while we look forward to the healing our Lord and Savior promises in Revelation 21 - “He will wipe every tear from their eyes… death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.” Thank you Lord for this promise!

Gerald’s Story

“You have made my dream come true.”
That’s what Gerald said when he recorded a thank you video for the church that is sponsoring him at Hope Vocational School. He’s studying catering and hotel management and will be graduating soon.
School is not free in Uganda. If your family doesn’t have money to pay school fees, your children don’t go to school. Even if you can afford to send your children to school, there is no guarantee they will graduate. That’s where Hope Vocational School comes in. At HOPE we offer an alternative path for those who are more inclined toward the trades rather than academics. Such practical skills pathways are encouraged by the Ugandan Ministry of Education as part of the national training system.

School is not free in Uganda. If your family doesn’t have money to pay school fees, your children don’t go to school. If you can pay the fees for one child, only one child goes to school. Even if you can afford to send your children to school, there is no guarantee they will graduate. Students must take national exams several times along the way, and if they don’t pass the exam, they don’t continue in school. There are no second chances. There are very few job options for those who cannot afford an education. Often, to earn money young men and women will collect empty bottles in the street, or pound big rocks into gravel, or do laundry for another family. Not a good way to support your family.

That’s where Hope Vocational School comes in. Teaching young men and women a trade like hairdressing, motorcycle repair, or catering gives them the skills they need to find good jobs or start their own businesses. It gives young people like Gerald a chance to change the trajectory of their own lives and of their family for generations. Vocational sponsorship gives them hope.

During April 2027 a new class of students will graduate from Hope Vocational School. This is a day they have worked diligently for and will be excited to celebrate. Their lives will be changed! As Gerald said, “Their dreams will come true.”

“Go together” is in the DNA of the medical team from North Carolina. From the time they meet at the airport until they land in Uganda, they are working together.

Colleen posted this report on their activity during September. One of the greatest needs is not only spiritual healing but physical healing as well. Each time a medical team comes to serve, we are reminded of what a difference compassionate care can make. From eyeglass fittings and laboratory testing to medical consultations and treatment, every part of the medical team was busy!

Across three locations—Mutungo Church, Mawanga Clinic, and Nanda Church - the needs were great. We certainly could not see everyone who needed help, but we were able to care for more than 1,000 patients, far exceeding our targeted estimate. We thank God for every person encouraged, examined, and treated.
A huge thank-you to Dr. Bill Johanson and his team of capable and compassionate medical professionals, along with our Ugandan medical staff who worked tirelessly alongside them. May God richly bless them for sharing their time and skills to serve! Love and Compassion shows on the faces and in the eyes of everyone involved as this team works together for the ministries in Uganda. Would you join us so that….

Celebrating 40 years of ministry!

“Go together with us” is based on the African proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” This is a popular proverb that highlights the power of teamwork.

We at United for Uganda invite you to “go together with us”. We have seen teamwork in action over the last 40 years of ministry in Uganda. The video that aired for the first time this summer shows the commitment of our missionaries, Tim and Colleen Stevenson, to make unity work because of their love for the people of Uganda.

We have learned about teamwork from the Bible passage in Ecclesiastes “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9)

Nothing demonstrates working together better than working side by side with fellow Christ-followers in serving the people of Uganda. Churches have been built where the people are now able to learn about the saving faith of Jesus Christ. Schools are located near a church to provide sponsored children with the freedom to attend and learn. Clinics are in places where sick people can be helped.

These are great benefits we can provide but most of all we are able to unite in prayer to lift up our friends and partners in Uganda when they have a spiritual need or just need words of encouragement.
