Guyu (谷雨), meaning "Grain Rain," is the 6th of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar. It usually begins around April 19–21 each year, marking the end of spring.

Key features of Guyu:

· Agricultural significance: It signals the perfect time for sowing and planting. The name comes from the ancient belief that rain during this period helps grains grow strong and healthy.
· Weather: Rainfall increases significantly, which is vital for crops in northern China. The temperature rises, but late frosts may still occur.
· Customs:
· Drinking tea: Guyu tea is believed to clear heat and improve eyesight.
· Eating toon sprouts (Xiangchun): A seasonal vegetable enjoyed for its fresh taste.
· Offering sacrifice to Cangjie: In some regions, people honor the legendary inventor of Chinese characters, as folklore ties his creation to a “rain of millet.”
· Health tips: It’s advised to eat light, nutritious foods (like vegetables and beans), stay hydrated, and protect against dampness.

The solar term in March: Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox, known as Chunfen in Chinese, is the fourth solar term of the 24 solar terms. It usually falls on March 20th or 21st each year. In 2026, it occurs on March 20.

Interesting on that day:
1. Day and night nearly equal
2. Yin and yang equally balanced
3. Easier balanced an egg

The Lantern Festival (元宵节 - Yuánxiāo Jié) is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 15th day of the first month in the lunar calendar, marking the end of the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival).
It falls on the first full moon night of the lunar new year, symbolizing reunion and the return of spring. (In 2026, this will be on Tuesday, March 3rd).
The main traditions are
1. watching Lanterns (赏灯): Cities and parks are decorated with elaborate lantern displays, often featuring designs from folklore, zodiac animals, and modern light shows. In ancient times, this was one of the few nights women were allowed to go out to view the lanterns, making it a romantic holiday as well.
2. Eating Tangyuan/Yuanxiao (吃汤圆/元宵): These are sweet glutinous rice balls served in syrup. They are round, symbolizing wholeness, togetherness, and family unity.
3. Guessing Lantern Riddles (猜灯谜): Riddles are written on slips of paper and attached to lanterns for people to solve, adding an intellectual challenge to the festivities.
4. Lion and Dragon Dances (舞龙舞狮): Performances are common in public spaces to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits.
