The American Patriots battled the British on September 19th and October 7th. The British, under General John Burgoyne, were attempting to divide New England from the Southern colonies. The Americans were under the command of General Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold. However, Arnold became so argumentative about tactics that General Gates stripped him of his command! The American militia continued to arrive. The British suffered great loss and General Burgoyne found himself surrounded by much larger forces. He surrendered his entire army to General Gates on October 17, 1777,

Ths battle took place in Cherokee County, South Carolina. The America Patriot militia fought Loyalist militia. It was a decisive American victory and a pivotal event in the Southern Campaign.

What is a Gold Star Mother or family? This is the recognition that this family has had a service member pass away during military service. The Gold Star represents the honor, and glory accorded the service member for their supreme sacrifice to their county in offering the last full measure of devotion and pride of the family.

The John Alden Chapter started the new program year with three commemorations during our meeting this weekend. We first remembered the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with a solemn service. After a break, we came back to celebrate Constitution Week and to have a Memorial Service for our Revolutionary War Patriots. At this meeting we also started a two-month collection of school supplies which will be donated to the Coleman Schools, and we wrote Christmas cards for active military. An America 250 display was up for members to see. We had had it up at the Sanford Centennial Museum. Members could also sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence. It was a busy meeting!
