Midland County joins people around the world in remembering Dolly Parton, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 80.

While Dolly will forever be remembered as one of the most beloved entertainers in American music, her legacy reaches far beyond the stage.

Through the Permian Basin Literacy Coalition, Midland County has been proud to support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program created to put books into the hands of young children and help build a lifelong love of reading.

Since Dolly launched the program in her home county in Tennessee in 1995, the Imagination Library has grown to serve children around the world, providing free, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age 5.

We are grateful that a small part of Dolly’s remarkable legacy has touched children and families right here in Midland County.

Our condolences go out to her family, friends and the millions of people whose lives she touched. ❤️📚

Dolly’s legacy reaches far beyond the music and stories that made her beloved around the world. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, she turned her love of reading into a gift that has reached children and families across generations, placing books into little hands and helping inspire a lifelong love of learning.

The Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin partners with the The Junior League of Midland, Inc. for their Reading Olympics program at the Boys and Girls Club of Midland, Texas

Did you know that Junior League of Midland members volunteered over 300 hours to Reading Olympics at last year? 📚

Reading Olympics takes place during the fall and spring semesters at BGC's Halff Park and Taylor Park locations.

This afterschool program is a great way for our members to work directly with our community's youth, but also plan engaging activities for these students.

Thanks to community partners like and , this program is able to continue making an impact for some of our youngest Midlanders.
